About the role
In this role, you’ll lead the evolution of our data warehouse capabilities by defining, implementing, and continuously improving processes and technologies that drive high-quality data solutions. You’ll provide technical leadership, champion best practices, and mentor junior team members to build a high-performing and collaborative data engineering culture.
Work type: 2-year fixed term contract.
Classification: Band 8, $122, 044 + super increasing to $125,701 + super from 1st July 2026.
Key responsibilities include:
- Facilitate innovation and best practice approach in the department and push the boundaries of what is possible in delivering services for customer and community satisfaction.
- Develop and maintain strategic networks with relevant key stakeholders within the field to fulfil the City’s strategic objectives.
- Data Platform:
- Carry out administrative tasks on the City’s Azure Databricks based data engineering environment including performance optimization, cost monitoring, availability monitoring and capacity planning
- Data engineering:
- Participate in requirement and design workshops to provide input on feasibility and solution options
- Lead in the planning and estimation of data engineering tasks
- Design and implement ETL/ELT pipelines and dimensional models under a medallion architecture on the Azure Databricks platform
- Conduct unit testing and validation of your built solutions, and work with team to rectify any defects identified through their additional testing
- Maintain technical documentation of built solutions
- Establish and maintain DevOps practices for data engineering, including version control, and CI/CD pipelines for automating the testing, building, and deployment of data pipelines and related applications.
- Business support including responding to queries associated with the data warehouse and resolving related data issues
- Advise team lead on opportunities for continuous improvement of processes and technologies for data engineering in line with industry best practice
About you
To be successful in this role, you will have a tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Management or equivalent plus relevant post-graduate qualifications, or an equivalent combination of formal training and at least 4 years’ experience in a similar role.
Essential Experience:
- Strong understanding of, and experience with, ETL/ELT and data warehouse architectures, particularly Databricks and Azure Data Factory (ADF). Advanced skills in SQL and Python, as relevant to data ingestion and transformation in a data warehousing context.
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of conceptual data models, dimensional data models and semantic layers, including collaborating on design with relevant stakeholders
- Strong theoretical understanding and practical experience in Azure or a similar cloud ecosystem, with the ability to advise on solution architecture and awareness of performance and cost implications of design decisions in a data platform architecture
- Demonstrated skills to support, influence, and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels of the organization, including executive and senior management, including facilitation of workshops as required.
- Demonstrated experience providing technical thought leadership, and mentoring junior data engineers. Well-developed writing, presentation, and speaking skills to align with stakeholders and achieve support for task outcomes.
Preferred candidates will be required to undergo a National Police Check as part of the recruitment process (funded by the City).
