Context
The Lecturer, Inclusive Education position is funded under the Higher Education Participation and Partnerships (HEPPP) program. The objective of the Inclusive Education project is to support teaching teams at Deakin to use inclusive principles and practices in course and unit design, teaching practice, assessment and feedback, learning environments and student support. Since 2018, this project has delivered expertise, programs and professional development to staff to build capability in inclusive education, with a recent focus on digital accessibility, open education resources, and teaching practice; resulting in more inclusive course design, pedagogies, assessment and resources leading to improved equity student success. In 2025, this role will support Deakin staff to explore the opportunities and challenges that arise with developments in artificial intelligence, with a view to support equity, diversity and inclusion in higher education in our learning environments.
The position
The lecturer will contribute to academic and scholarly leadership in the Teaching Capability Team by developing and delivering professional learning, programs and activities to grow and sustain the development of Deakin staff in inclusive education. In 2025, the role will focus on the connections between artificial intelligence, equity, diversity and inclusion in higher education, exploring the challenges and affordances of AI for staff and students. They will work collaboratively with other teams in DLF, the faculties and learning support staff to design and deliver programs that build capability in inclusive education. The role will report to Professor Barbie Panther, Director, Teaching Capability, and work closely with the Teaching Capability team, the Digital Learning team and stakeholders across the university.
Responsibilities
- Lead the Inclusive Education community of practice within the Deakin Teaching and Learning Academy with a focus on exploring the challenges and affordances of artificial intelligence for equity, diversity and inclusion in higher education.
- Lead the Digital Accessibility Champions project, to continue to build capability across the university in digital accessibility.
- Provide operational and practical advice on areas associated with inclusive education to the Director, Teaching Capability and to other areas of the university as required.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the Inclusive Education project and report regularly to the HEPPP project team.
- Research, publish and present individually, or in collaboration with peers at conferences and through scholarly publication on artificial intelligence and equity, diversity and inclusion.
