Job Description

The Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech seeks applications for an open rank position in the area of secure software systems.  Specific areas of interest include cyber-physical system (CPS) security, security of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML), security of future wireless and cloud systems, and security of connected infrastructure and the Internet of Things (IoT). 

This position is based in Northern Virginia and part of the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI) which is a $20M/year investment in building a hub in Northern Virginia anchored by Virginia Tech that connects education, research, and innovation programs at universities across the state in cybersecurity and related areas.  This hub will develop and connect strategic research and innovation programs in cyber with a range of experiential learning and educational programs.  The starting point for CCI’s research focus is at the intersection of CPS and wireless system security and AI/ML, seeking to develop major research programs to tackle security and privacy for connected infrastructure, smart cities, and the IoT.

The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with existing Virginia Tech faculty in both Northern Virginia and Blacksburg with wide-ranging expertise in security.  See for the summary of 60 faculty members working in the field.  Additionally this candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with the Hume Center for National Security and Technology ( which is currently operating and further developing a number of large-scale research programs in cybersecurity and related fields with industry and government partners as part of developing CCI.  Virginia Tech is designated by the National Security Agency as a Center of Academic Excellence in both Cyber Defense Research and Cyber Operations.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a nationally-recognized, externally funded research program, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and participate in department, college, university, and/or professional service and outreach activities.  Additionally, this position is part of the Integrated Security Destination Area (, an initiative to develop interdisciplinary research and education programs in security that cut across technology, policy, and business.  As part of this network, there will be a range of opportunities for this position to engage in topics such as cyber policy, cyber law, cyber conflict, and business aspects of cyber.

Required Qualifications

An earned Ph.D. in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, completed prior to employment; demonstrated excellence in research, scholarship, and teaching in electrical/computer engineering, or evidence of high potential for such excellence; ability to articulate a coherent agenda of research or scholarship and to identify potential funding sources to support such research activities; effective communication skills; willingness and ability to work in a technology-based research and education environment, characterized by use of learning technologies, distance learning, online courses, video-conferencing, and network and grid-based collaborative research.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience in the role of PI or Co-PI on funded research projects; ability and willingness to work collaboratively with faculty from a variety of disciplines; experience in working with students as academic or career advisor, overseeing student internships or service-learning activities; interest or experience in mentoring students, both undergraduate or graduate, in research; interest or experience working effectively with a diverse student population.
