Job Description

The College of Engineering is seeking to fill a full time administrative and professional faculty position responsible for retention activities within the College. The College is committed to increasing the diversity of the undergraduate student body and this position is essential to the recruitment and retention of these students. Responsibilities will include providing vision, leadership and supervision of the following undergraduate support programs: freshman mentoring programs and residential learning communities for freshman men & women in the College of Engineering. The position will also involve advising and counseling students within the College. The implementation of these programs is facilitated by both professional and student support staff. The position requires frequent evening and weekend work, and limited travel.

Primary duties include:

  • Oversees and implements all aspects of the first-year mentoring programs for all engineering students including those in the engineering living learning communities. This includes support for the upper class leaders who help manage the program and supervision & support of a graduate student who organizes the upper class leaders
  • Oversees and implements two residential living learning communities for men & women first year students and upper-class leaders
  • Leads and supports a team of Graduate Teaching Assistants who instruct multiple sections of the first-year courses for the living learning communities
  • Leads and supports a team of upper-class leaders who serve as Teaching Assistants for the sophomore level leadership development course for the living learning community
  • Managing the collaboration with Residential Life staff for the engineering living learning communities
  • Supervising and supporting a team of graduate students responsible for the maker space lab in the residence hall for the living learning communities
  • Manage the relationships with corporate and community partners for student programming events such as career fairs, professional development workshops and maker space hands on activities
  • Managing the budgets and reports for the mentoring programs and living learning communities
  • Advises and counsels students which includes all aspects of student centered undergraduate advising from first year to degree attainment including academic skill development, academic and student conduct issues and degree plan progress

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in education, counseling, engineering or field of study related to area of assignment, or training and experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree
  • Knowledge of mechanisms of student retention, student development theories, career development strategies, counseling skills, and recruitment strategies
  • Must enjoy working with students
  • Professional manner of communication
  • Advanced computer skills, particularly related to data management software
  • Excellent organizational skills, creativity, flexibility and self-motivation
  • Accurate attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in education, counseling, engineering or field of study related to area of assignment, or training and experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree
  • Excellent communication skills and experience in making formal presentations to medium to large groups
  • Experience in implementing programs for pre-college and college students
  • A broad knowledge of university policies and procedures, particularly related to registration, class scheduling, degree and graduation requirements
  • An ability to use and interpret the BANNER family of administrative systems
  • Knowledge of Career Services practices including recruiting and placement practices is also preferred, but not required
  • Ability to work effectively with all university constituents

Commensurate with experience and level of education
