Job Description

The Assistant Dean of Advancement in the Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine manages the college's advancement team and solicits philanthropic gifts from alumni, parents, grateful clients, and friends of the college which align with the College's strategic priorities. This highly motivated professional will be involved with the planning and implementation of College fund raising, alumni and referring practioner relations, and communications. They will fulfill the duties under the direction of the college in close cooperation with the university's central advancement office.

Reporting to the Dean of the Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine and the Associate Vice President of Development for Colleges, the Assistant Dean of Advancement will:

Assist with planning and executing fundraising, alumni relations, and communications activities for the Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine.

Travel, on average, five to eight days per month to cultivate, solicit, steward, and identify prospects for the Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine.

Manage a portfolio of between 75 to 100 prospects.

Have typical solicitation ranges of $250,000 - $1,000,000+.

Close $2,000,000 of New Gifts and Commitments per year using a three year rolling average.

Close on average 10-13 gifts per fiscal year.

Manage a team of approximately ten people to ensure that a cooperative team effort is made to meet goals and objectives. This management includes direct oversight of:

The Director of Alumni and Referring Practioner Relations along with the Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations and Director of the Virginia Tech Teaching Hospital.

The Director of Communications along with the Vice President for University Relations.

Develop and implement cultivation, solicitation, and engagement strategies which include building, managing, and soliciting a portfolio of major gift prospects and broader grateful client community.

Establish strong working relationships with central advancement, collegiate and constituent development officers and the College faculty, clinicians, and staff to foster a productive work environment.

As a member of the College’s senior team attend college leadership team meetings and contribute agenda items from the Advancement team.

Work closely with the Dean, Associate Vice President of Development for Colleges, faculty, and clinicians to develop and implement cultivation and solicitation strategies in support of College programs.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and significant fundraising experience or Master's degree.

Demonstrated experience in fundraising, sales/marketing, advertising, public relations, communications or a related field.

Willingness to travel on a frequent basis.

Individuals should demonstrate professionalism, with strong communication skills and be capable of motivating volunteers as well as donors.

The successful candidate will be self-motivated and have the ability to work as a team member in a complex organization.

Develop and implement strategies with increasing complexity.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated successful track record in fund raising.

Preference given to candidates with experience in higher education fundraising.

Preference for proven success in building productive, relationships with senior administrators, key business leaders, faculty, staff, institutional boards, volunteers, and/or donors.

Previous major gifts experience working with progressively complex strategies.
