The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Virginia Tech is seeking applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Agricultural Technology Program and Assistant Dean. The mission of the Agricultural Technology (AT) Program at Virginia Tech is to train graduates that fulfill technical and management level needs in the rapidly changing and diverse agriculture and green industries. Our student-oriented faculty educates leaders using combinations of classroom, hands-on, and experiential teaching methods. As a result, graduates of the AT program are in high demand. The successful candidate will provide leadership to the Agricultural Technology (AT) program by mentoring faculty, supervising curriculum evaluation and development, fostering relationships with industry and alumni, developing and implementing recruitment plans and managing unit reports, governance documents and budget. This is a calendar year, 12-month, position and reports directly to the Associate Dean and Director of Academic Programs in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). This is not a tenure-accruing position but tenure previously earned may be transferred.
Responsibilities: The incumbent will provide primary leadership to the AT program by working with the faculty and advisory board to supervise curriculum evaluation and development and by fostering relationships with industry and alumni in order to obtain program feedback, provide career and internship opportunities, increase opportunities to connect, engage and serve with AT and CALS, and help the program stay current with industry trends. The incumbent will oversee development and implementation of a recruitment plan for the AT program and manage and communicate departmental reports, governance documents, and the AT program budget. The incumbent will work with the Associate Dean and Director of Academic Programs as requested. Although not required, the incumbent may conduct scholarly research and writing if desired.
A Ph.D. in an agriculture or green industry discipline. Experience in budget management and demonstrated excellent communication, human relations and leadership skills.
Teaching experience in a post-secondary setting. Familiarity with various instructional technologies such as on-line teaching technologies and virtual reality.
