Reporting to the Hazardous Waste Manager, the Hazardous Waste Technician ensures and assists with safely handling, transporting, and storing all university hazardous (chemical and radioactive) material and waste according to established safety procedures and regulations. Assists in responding to hazardous material incidents.
Working knowledge of chemical, biological, and/or radiological principles. Knowledge and/or experience applying federal and state OSHA and EPA regulations. Experience with laboratory safety. Knowledge of proper chemical handling/disposal procedures and emergency response techniques. Working knowledge of computers and software. Ability to provide emergency response assistance to university personnel. Ability to safely move and handle up to 75 pounds. Ability to wear personal protective equipment. Ability to work independently. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Degree in chemistry, biology, engineering, or related science and/or experience with hazardous waste management and safety procedures. HAZWOPER certification. Hazardous waste management certification. NRRT certified. Training in hazardous material handling. Working knowledge of operational characteristics of radiological equipment. Experience in the operation of radiation detection and measurement equipment. Working knowledge of radiation standards and regulations. Demonstrated ability to maintain mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment. Previous experience working in a team-based environment. CDL with hazmat endorsement.
The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
