Job Description

The Director of Alumni Relations will serve as the chief engagement and events officer in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences (CLAHS). This position will be primarily responsible for providing leadership, stewardship and guidance for CLAHS’s engagement efforts with alumni, donors and friends to ultimately increase constituent engagement and philanthropic support for the college. Additionally, the director will work collaboratively with colleagues in University Advancement and in CLAHS to further Virginia Tech’s overall engagement and institutional advancement goals and objectives.

The director will be responsible for planning, promoting, executing, and evaluating alumni engagement programs, projects, and events for the college. In collaboration with the college’s Director of Communications, the director will strategize and implement targeted alumni communication efforts for CLAHS, including the management and execution of departmental newsletters

This position will work in tandem with College leadership and the members of the college’s advancement team to pursue and promote the overall institutional goals related to communications, fundraising, and alumni engagement. The director will provide leadership and stewardship support for college and departmental advisory boards and committees. This work may include the identification of potential board members, organizing retreats, meetings, trainings, and guiding communications specific to this constituency with a focus on diversifying membership.

The director will be a key contributor to the college’s fundraising efforts by actively identifying, engaging, and cultivating constituents who have the capacity and inclination for philanthropic support.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and relevant experience or Master’s degree.

Demonstrated experience in alumni engagement, event planning, and/or client-relations experience

Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with a wide range of constituencies

Demonstrated ability to strategize, implement and build constituency programs and activities

Preferred Qualifications

Significant experience in event planning particularly in higher education

Experience in alumni relations; significant experience developing effective strategies for planning events to enhance constituent participation and philanthropic support

Demonstrated ability to train and motivate volunteers

Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment

Knowledge of Virginia Tech and its programs desirable.

  • Regional and national travel required for the purposes of conducting field research, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, which may include overnights and weekends.
  • Must have the ability and willingness to travel utilizing standard, commercial, and/or personal modes of transportation.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends, and participation in college or university programs when possible.
