Job Description

The Installation and Repair Technician serves as a highly skilled technician for Hokie Passport Services (HPS). The incumbent collaborates with the HPS Network Technician Supervisor in supporting departmental operations and services. Reporting to the Network Technician Supervisor, the responsibilities for this position include installing, repairing, servicing, adjusting and testing of devices, circuitry and components on electronic communications equipment including access and point of sale devices. The Installation and Repair Technician also serves on the EDA on-call schedule.

In addition, the incumbent performs other duties as requested; takes initiative to support a healthy work environment; strives to fulfill the terms in the Standards of Business Conduct; exemplifies Virginia Tech’s Principles of Community; and supports the university’s motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).

Required Qualifications

* Experience with electronic equipment and electronic principles.
* Experience with telecommunication and/or network installations.
* Experience in DC low voltage wiring applications.
* Demonstrated experience in troubleshooting techniques.
* Ability to operate and understand support equipment such as laptops, VOM, network scanners, cable toner and inductive amplifiers.
* Ability to read, interpret and provide technical information based on technical drawings such as schematics, blueprints and wiring diagrams.
* Good communication and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
* Ability to safely, frequently, and independently move and handle up to 50 lbs.
* Experience with the general use of personal computers.

Preferred Qualifications

* Associate degree in electronics or a related field or equivalent technical training and experience.
* Knowledge of electrical fundamentals and theory applied in accordance with federal and state codes.

* General understanding of the mechanical workings of doors and locking devices.

* Ability to make non-routine repairs through the use of electronic knowledge and application of creative solutions.

* Experience with relational database applications.
* Knowledge of basic programming commands and Oracle based systems.
* Strong background in repairing and maintaining complex electronic equipment.
* Experience with electronic door access hardware installations.

JOB DUTIES

Network Maintenance (50%)

Maintain network integrity by performing routine and nonroutine maintenance. Troubleshoot and conduct repairs on the campus card reader network to include both software and hardware systems in a timely manner. Troubleshoot and conduct repairs on electronic door hardware failures in a timely manner. Conduct preventative maintenance on system components and equipment (Cash to Card Machines, Merchant Readers, Point of Sales, etc.) and take corrective action when needed. Respond promptly to alarms and system failures. Provide additional support to the Electronics Technician Senior when requested and as needed. Provide system usage instruction and communication to end users both on and off campus as needed.

Installation and Repair (30%)

Independently install equipment and components, pull wire, mount equipment, and program locations as requested in a timely manner. Provide technical assistance to the Electronics Technician Senior when requested and as needed. Perform preventative maintenance on designated equipment and systems as directed. Contact supervisor when any abnormal issues are found. Conduct repairs as directed.

Equipment (10%)

Ensure that inventory levels are at adequate levels for repair, maintenance and installation needs. Maintain, track, and verify surplus equipment. Compile, process and complete necessary paperwork associated with the surplus of equipment. Assist with Fixed Assets tracking, reporting, and auditing. Assist the System Administrator with computer hardware installations and equipment maintenance/repair. Assist with the coordination of equipment repairs as assigned.

Miscellaneous (10%)

Collect funds and process deposits for assigned Cash to Card machines. Provide support to other HPS operations when requested. Serve on the EDA on call rotational schedule.
