Job Description

The Director of Instructional Media Development provides strategic leadership for, and day-to-day management of, educational video and media production within Technology-enhanced Learning and Online Strategies (TLOS). Reporting to the Senior Director of Learning Services, the Director leads a team dedicated to agile development of a variety of instructional media and video products, including studio productions, animation and graphics, virtual and 3D simulations, and other e-learning objects. This position defines and drives innovation in instructional media production for the digital learning experience for distance, online, and flexible delivery offerings for Virginia Tech courses and faculty professional development. In order to successfully fulfill these responsibilities, the Director actively participates in TLOS leadership conversations, builds relationships with external partners, manages expectations of internal and external clients, and coordinates project planning, delivery, and reporting activities.

In addition to personally producing high-quality media products in a variety of formats, the Director of Instructional Media Development performs the following managerial functions:

- Serve as a member of the leadership team for the TLOS Learning Services group, coordinating projects with the Director of Instructional Design and the Director of the Professional Development Network.

- Supervise the work of instructional media developers and video studio personnel, overseeing the recruitment, training, professional development, coaching, and evaluation of assigned employees.

- Build strategic partnerships within TLOS and with faculty and administrators across Virginia Tech.

- Identify and pursue opportunities for instructional media development in TLOS’s program-level engagements and within individual course offerings.

- Collaborate with TLOS project managers to establish project plans that provide appropriate resources, ensure course launch dates are met, and document completion of tasks and major milestones.

- Manage projects to ensure high levels of faculty and student satisfaction, including oversight of project scoping, instructional development, delivery, and follow up.

- Ensure that all materials follow best practices for universal design for learning, accessibility, and user experience design, and are aligned with Virginia Tech’s brand guidelines.

- Develop and employ metrics for measuring the success of TLOS’s instructional media development efforts to regularly evaluate and refine the team’s work.

Required Qualifications

- Master’s degree, or an equivalent level of combined educational and professional experience.

- Significant experience in a media development environment, demonstrated through a portfolio of polished media products.

- Proven track record of supervising and mentoring employees to achieve their potential.

- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects in a dynamic environment, ensuring that high-quality products are delivered on schedule and within budget.

- Successful experience developing and managing relationships with a range of partners through excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

- Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse team environment and a commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

- Advanced degree in a field related to media production, instructional design, or education.

- Documented instructional design or media development experience in a higher education setting.

- Broad knowledge of technology-enhanced learning environments, tools, services, and pedagogies in use in higher education, ideally including the Canvas learning management system.

- Experience working with university faculty and administrators to create high-impact media products.
