We’re currently searching for a Transcriber/Captionist to join our Services for Students with Disabilities team in Blacksburg, VA to help us in our mission. So, if you’re passionate about helping students, please keep reading.

HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS ROLE:
1) You’ll be joining the Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) team; a department centered on providing numerous accommodations, services and resources for students with disabilities and temporary injuries or illnesses.
2) You’ll be reporting to the Senior Interpreter, in a 1500-hour wage position.
3) You’ll function as a captionist to facilitate communication with the D/deaf, hard of hearing and hearing students, faculty, and visitors on Virginia Tech's campus.
4) You'll use the CPrintTM SpeechtoText captioning system, caption/type in real time discussions/lectures on a laptop computer in academic classes, labs, and other curricular activities for Virginia Tech students
5) You'll provide CPrintTM captioning for prospective Virginia Tech students and transcribe uncaptioned media.
6) You'll support the SSD office and Senior Interpreter as needed.
7) You’ll be offered a compensation of $23 per hour.

Required Qualifications
• Minimum typing speed of 60 words per minute, with no errors
• If not already trained, willing to participate in C-PrintTM training program
• Basic computer knowledge
• Good listening and memory skills
• Must be available to work evening or occasional weekend assignments

Preferred Qualifications
• Typing speed of 90+ words per minute
• Satisfactory completion of C-PrintTM training
• Previous transcribing, transcription, or captioning experience
• Experience in a post-secondary educational setting
• Current knowledge of D/deaf culture
• Sign language communication or interpreting skills
