The Swanger lab at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute is seeking a full time Research Associate to assist in general laboratory operations and conduct research experiments. The Swanger lab investigates molecular and cellular mechanisms controlling neuronal communication in the healthy mouse brain and mouse models of epilepsy. We utilize molecular, cellular, pharmacological, and physiological techniques. Responsibilities include general cell and molecular biology lab techniques, basic animal handling (specifically mice), mouse colony maintenance, and laboratory management including supply ordering, preparing lab reagents, tracking laboratory expenses, and maintaining laboratory equipment and certifications. Applicants should have a strong background or understanding of general molecular and cellular biology techniques, but a background in neuroscience is not required. Research Associates are an essential part of the scientific team and play a lead role in organizing and conducting research experiments. Opportunities to participate in data analysis, and manuscript and/or grant preparation will be available for interested candidates. The successful team member will be detail-oriented, organized, skilled with adjusting priorities and problem solving, and have a desire to succeed in a fast-paced research environment.
• MA/MS degree in Neuroscience, Biological Sciences, Cell/Molecular Biology, or related field; or BA/BS degree with significant experience.
• Demonstrated experience working in a laboratory environment.
• Demonstrated training in laboratory animal handling
• Experience with lab management, including ordering supplies, maintaining lab materials, and maintaining equipment.
Commensurate with experience
The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
