Job Description

Virginia Tech’s Moss Arts Center is the university’s professional presenting program that reports to the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost. The center presents artists from around the globe and from close to home – from renowned masters to new emerging voices – with a special focus on experiences that expand cultural awareness and deepen understanding for the more than 35,000 participants we engage each year. Since opening in 2013, the center has brought innovative and diverse programming to the university. Each year the center provides 25-30 national and international artists in performance, 6-8 distinct gallery exhibitions, 100+ student engagement opportunities, and other impactful outreach across campus and throughout the region, including programs for youth. The Associate Director of Engagement works closely with the Director of Programming and other Moss Arts Center staff to develop engagement initiatives and steward collaborations with university faculty, staff, students, artists, and others across campus and in the community. The Associate Director actively seeks and nurtures ongoing relationships with community organizations, artists, and others to create sustained partnerships and opportunities for deeper engagement with the arts as a key component of the programming at the Moss Arts Center.

The Associate Director is expected to be an effective communicator and collaborator, creative thinker, and strong project manager, with a proven commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.

Required Qualifications

- Advanced degree in an arts related field or a Bachelor’s degree combined with significant related experience.
- Experience developing public engagement with the arts.
- Experience working with university and community-based organizations and initiatives.
- Experience working with diverse communities, artists, and artistic genres.
- Proven track record of managing activities and projects from conception to completion, including comprehensive logistical planning, coordination, and communication.
- Broad knowledge of multiple art forms.
- Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications

- Professional experience at a major presenting organization within an institution of higher education.
- Supervisory experience.
- Direct experience with community engagement efforts in the context of performing arts programming; experience in the New River Valley a plus.
- Demonstrated understanding of the academic mission of a comprehensive research university and issues unique to the higher education community.

$70,000 - $85,000, commensurate with experience

Additional Information

Position is located in Blacksburg, VA and is eligible for up to one day per week remote work arrangement.

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
