Job Description

The Research Scientist (RS) will develop and conduct research protocols related to ongoing projects in the Auditory Systems Lab (ASL) directed by Dr. John Casali, on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. The RS will have responsibility for obtaining relevant existing literature, developing and testing data collection hardware, developing, integrating and maintaining research hardware/software, data analysis, report preparation, and management of the ASL lab.

Required Qualifications

- Ph.D. degree in Human Factors Engineering or related discipline
- Significant experience in developing test systems for human factors auditory experiments including specifically: Real Ear Attenuation at Threshold (REAT), psychophysical auditory situation awareness testing, and Acoustical Test Fixture testing using GRAS and KEMAR manikins.
- Additional requirements are: creativity, independence, motivation, effective communication skills, strong work habits, and an ability to work independently.

Preferred Qualifications

- Demonstrated experience developing software to support human subjects research studies: REAT, auditory situation awareness, and Acoustical Test Fixtures.
- Demonstrated experience developing software and hardware systems to support human subjects research studies.
- Proficient programming with MATLAB and LabView.
- Extensive experience with REAT and MIRE testing.
- Previous research experience on acoustics and auditory experimentation projects for U.S. military as this position directly requires interaction with U.S. military scientists and their contractors.
