Reporting to the Mechanical Services Supervisor, the incumbent will perform work in the mechanical trades including welding, plumbing, steam fitting, and HVAC to ensure that building systems are operating within the desired optimal indoor environmental conditions at the university. The incumbent will work on a variety of mechanical projects and will perform a wide variety of skilled repair, installation, and maintenance tasks.
Responsibilities for this position include welding repairs and metal fabricating required by multiple trades within Facilities. To ensure success in this role, you should have advanced knowledge of a wide array of facilities systems, good mechanical skills, and excellent troubleshooting skills because the reliable operation of these systems is critical to the university.
• Verifiable journeyman-level experience in a large commercial, construction, or institutional setting in the mechanical installation, repair, and maintenance practices.
• Must have or be able to obtain a Journeyman’s or Masters license in Plumbing or HVAC, within eleven months of hire date; OR current Journey or Master level licensing agreement (reciprocity) from another\jurisdiction as approved by the Virginia Board for Contractors. Incumbent will have 6 months from hire date to acquire a Virginia license if they currently hold a license from a reciprocal jurisdiction.
• American Welding Society (AWS) certification, American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) certification, or similar welding certification.
• Experience with pipe welding in a relevant setting, determining the required tools, materials, and welding methods.
• Experience examining completed welds to ensure they are free of defects, smooth, and functional with consideration given for the application.
• Significant experience installing, troubleshooting and repairing HVAC flow controls.
• Working knowledge of a variety of technical documents such as blueprints, technical drawings, sketches, specification records, and operating and maintenance manuals.
• Recordkeeping experience such as processing work orders and/or tracking inventory.
• Able to perform routine welding, plumbing, mechanical, or HVAC tasks.
• Ability to recognize and understand industry terminologies of multiple trades.
• Ability to use a computer and keep accurate and complete records.
• Ability to perform work with minimal margin of error and work independently with little or no supervision.
• Must have excellent communication skills, good teamwork skills, and be able to understand, comprehend and follow directions in the workplace.
• Ability to safely move and handle heavy objects weighing 50 pounds; climb and work from elevated workstations such as ladders and scaffolds; maneuver and work in tight spaces; and work for considerable periods of time standing, sitting, walking, reaching, bending pushing/pulling, and doing repetitive movement with tools, equipment and computer keyboarding.
• Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
• May be required to work additional hours/shifts to meet the needs of the department.
• This is a designated emergency personnel position.
• Experience in a large commercial or university setting.
• Technical training, education, and/or experience in plumbing, steamfitting, HVAC, and/or millwright trades.
• Customer-service oriented
• Experience with an online work order system; for example, but not limited to: AiM (HokieServ)
• Due to emergency call-in requirements, must be able to arrive on campus within one hour.
The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
