Job Description

Reporting to the Facilities Occupational Health and Safety Manager, this position assists with the coordination, oversight, and audits for the implementation of university Safety and Health Programs across all areas within the Division of Facilities. The Coordinator assists with the safety and other training sessions for the Division of Facilities. Performs inspections, audits, analysis, and record-keeping in compliance with federal and state regulations and guidelines for assigned program areas. Interviews, observes, and investigates, workplaces for hazard identification, evaluation of risk, and recommendations on engineering and administrative controls and personal protective equipment. Documents findings and effectively communicates corrective and preventative measures to various levels of the Division of Facilities. Coordinates, schedules, and performs industrial hygiene-related inspections and monitoring as needed or required to determine compliance with standards and OSHA regulations. Applies training, experience, and knowledge, and provides inspections, audits, analysis, and record keeping consistent with federal and state regulations, guidelines, and university policy and programs to facilitate compliance and reduce exposure of faculty, staff, students, and visitors to hazards relating to assigned program areas. Conducts Hazard Risk Assessments for targeted activities and advises staff on mitigations. Supports the university Asbestos and Lead Compliance Programs by performing asbestos and lead assessments, sampling, evaluations, abatement, and controls. Performs sampling and analysis and issues recommendations based on findings. Coordinates, oversees, and/or audits abatement activities. Maintains required documentation including building profiles, abatement records, air sampling records, and periodic assessments of installed materials. Trains or coordinates asbestos/lead training needed by all covered employees. Serves as principal backup to Facilities Occupational Health and Safety Manager and performs other duties as needed or required. Will serve as a member of the on-call response team for emergencies.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health, science, engineering, safety, industrial hygiene or closely related discipline or training and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree.
• Extensive working knowledge of the technical principles, procedures, and techniques used to achieve compliance with OSHA safety-related regulations and industry standards.
• Considerable safety-related experience interpreting regulations, developing written programs and training, implementing safety programs, and performing inspections to assure compliance with OSHA regulations and industry standards.
• Experience preparing technical reports and professional correspondence.
• Ability to act independently and as a team member.
• Strong interpersonal, supervisory, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications; computer skills with experience such as spreadsheets, databases, and word processing.
• Virginia Asbestos Inspector, Project Monitor and Project Designer, and Lead Inspector or ability to obtain within 6 months.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience working in a university or similar environment.
• Preference is given for designation as Certified Safety Professional or ability to obtain within one year.
• Currently licensed as a Virginia Asbestos Inspector, Project Monitor and Project Designer, and Lead Inspector.
• Certified Industrial Hygienist.
• Experience using databases and AutoCAD or similar software.
