The Director for the IT Project Management Office (PMO) is a senior leadership role responsible for driving enterprise-wide project management excellence and strategic alignment across Virginia Tech’s IT initiatives. This role provides visionary leadership, ensuring IT projects support the university’s mission, long-term technology strategy, and operational priorities.
As a key member of the IT Governance, Planning, and Strategy (GPS) leadership team, the Director for the IT PMO oversees enterprise project portfolio management, drives organizational change, and ensures the implementation of best-in-class project management methodologies. This position serves as a senior advisor to executive leadership, playing a critical role in shaping IT governance and university-wide technology priorities.
The Director collaborates closely with institutional leaders, university partners, and key stakeholders to enhance project execution, drive innovation, and ensure project outcomes align with university objectives. This role requires a deep understanding of enterprise project management, strategic planning, and change management within a complex higher education environment.
• Master’s degree OR bachelor's degree plus training and work experience that equates to a master's degree.
• Project Management Professional (PMP) or Program Management Professional (PgMP) certification.
• Significant experience in IT project and portfolio management.
• Proven experience leading enterprise-wide IT project management offices or similar strategic functions.
• Strong leadership experience, including mentoring and managing high-performing teams in complex environments.
• Demonstrated expertise in strategic planning, IT governance, and organizational change management.
• Extensive experience engaging with executive leadership and stakeholders to drive strategic initiatives.
• Strong financial acumen with experience overseeing large-scale project budgets.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and influencing skills with the ability to engage senior leaders and cross-functional teams.
• Ability to develop and implement project management frameworks, governance structures, and methodologies at an enterprise level.

• Experience leading digital transformation initiatives within higher education or similarly complex environments.
• Expertise in business process re-engineering and operational optimization.
• Strong familiarity with enterprise portfolio management tools and methodologies.
• Knowledge of shared governance models and experience working in a higher education setting.
