Job Description

Virginia Tech’s Division of Facilities’ communications team is filling an engagement specialist position that has a key focus on internal communications and employee engagement.

Reporting to the Director for Communications and Engagement for the Division of Facilities, but also working closely with the Chief of Staff for the Division of Facilities, the engagement specialist will collaborate with divisional leadership to share critical information around Virginia Tech’s initiatives with employees and develop event plans and strategies. The engagement specialist will also help foster a welcoming work environment through print and digital communications platforms.

The engagement specialist will partner with the division’s Chief of Staff teams -- including Communications and Engagement, Human Resources and Wellness, Finance and Operational Technology, External Affairs, and Internal Operations -- to develop written and visual assets that engage targeted audiences, support divisional and university priorities, and build the Virginia Tech brand.

The engagement specialist will also help support event planning and management for the division, as well as assist in developing external facing publications as necessary.

The successful candidate will have a passion for writing and editing for a variety of audiences, but particularly, internal audiences through digital and print platforms such as newsletters, stories, signage, and notices. The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding for graphic design principles appropriate for advancing organizational brand identity. The candidate will also have experience developing content that is digitally accessible.

The successful candidate will also have demonstrated experience in event planning and management.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter, highly organized, be able to work under tight deadlines, and able to move efficiently among multiple initiatives with different stakeholders throughout the day.

Required Qualifications

● Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English, or significant comparable training and experience
● Demonstrated professional experience in a communications field (internships are acceptable)
● Experience writing and editing in Associated Press style
● Experience writing for integrated media (print, web, and social media)
● Experience developing graphic design assets appropriate for a variety of platforms and uses including print, websites, social media, newsletters, presentations, and more
● Demonstrated experience planning and managing events
● Self-motivated, creative, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple and competing priorities in a dynamic environment
● Demonstrated ability to interact professionally with clients and manage client expectations.
● Proficient using Microsoft Office and Google Suite
● Proficient using Adobe Creative Suite
● Experience utilizing email marketing platforms such as Adobe Campaign
● Knowledge of accessible design principles

Preferred Qualifications

● Experience working in a construction environment.
● Experience developing stories and visual assets that advance organizational missions, visions, and priorities
● Experience working in a content management system such as Adobe Experience Manager or WordPress
