The Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation in the College of Natural Resources and Environment seeks a Trade and Field Technician for the following responsibilities:
Maintain the department’s Forest Harvesting Laboratory and equipment in a safe and efficient manner. Provide technical and logistical support for field projects. Assist faculty, staff, and graduate students with field, shop, and laboratory work. Deliver relevant instruction to department members. Assist with management, planning, and maintenance of the University’s Fishburn Forest property. Facilitate access to the department’s equipment room and vehicle fleet to support teaching and research operations. Maintain FREC Fixed Asset inventory and record keeping to ensure compliance with University policies and procedures.
• Working knowledge of forestry and natural resources field operations and procedures
• Experience in the use and routine maintenance of forestry field equipment
• Ability to perform or procure routine maintenance of vehicles
• Demonstrated competence in the use of computer programs such as spreadsheets,
word processing, and databases
• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent training and experience) in a discipline related to the department’s mission
• Additional experience, training, certificates, or education in fields related to natural
resources/environmental/biological sciences
• Experience operating equipment such as tractors or loaders
• Experience in public speaking, education, training, technical and/or research writing

About the College of Natural Resources and Environment
CNRE is one of nine academic colleges at Virginia Tech and has four academic departments covering a range of interests and disciplines: Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation, Fish and Wildlife Conservation, Geography, and Sustainable Biomaterials. The college employs more than 300 faculty and staff, including 83 tenure-track faculty. Approximately 1,000 undergraduate students in 11 majors and 200 graduate students in traditional master’s and doctoral programs are enrolled in the college at the Blacksburg campus.
