Job Description

The Director of Finance and Operations for the Myers-Lawson School of Construction (MLSoC) reports directly to the Director, and works in close coordination with the leadership team to align administrative, fiscal, human resources, and operational support with the school’s academic, research, outreach mission and priorities according to policies and procedures laid out by the university and VT Foundation, as well as adhering to the strategic plans, policies, processes, and expectations of the College of Engineering. This individual is the main point of contact for the College of Engineering for Financial and Operations matters. The position is responsible for overall financial and business management, human resource processes, administrative staff supervision, information technology and facilities management, including equipment inventories. This position provides strategic oversight of financial management, budget development, compliance, and reporting across all fund types, and ensures sponsored research and contractual processes are handled in accordance with federal, state, and institutional regulations. This position leads process design, continuous improvement and control to improve efficiency, quality, security, safety, and effectiveness.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in Public or Business Administration, finance, or related field(s), or a Bachelor’s degree with significant training and/or experience, which equates to an advanced degree.
Demonstrated experience in a financial role in higher education, with exposure to fund accounting, budgeting, payroll, and accounts receivables. Experience compiling, analyzing fiscal data and reporting.
Advanced skills in Microsoft Office (including Excel). Experience working within a human resource information system and financial management platforms. Strong analytical skills.
Demonstrated leadership, team, and supervisory experience with strong communication skills (interpersonal, written, public speaking).
Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to proper confidentiality, financial ethics and internal controls.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Virginia Tech systems such as Banner, HokieMart, Banner Time Entry, Chrome River, MicroStrategy, PageUp, and Labor Redistribution.
Experience in strategic planning, budget financial analysis and related process improvement and performance tracking and reporting.

Exempt: Not eligible for overtime

$105,000 - $130,000 - Commensurate with experience

Hours per week

40 hours and additional as needed
