Job Description
The Department of Biology at Norfolk State University invites applications for a nine-month tenure track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The department offers a diversity of options that are outlined in three curriculum models, each of which leads to a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Review of Applications will begin Oct 30, 2025, and continue until the position is filled. This position opened on October 20, 2025 and there is a five consecutive workdays minimum posting requirement.  The selected candidate will begin August 2026.

We seek candidates who are broadly trained in K-12 Biology Education with strong disciplinary content knowledge in the biological sciences and can model research-based best practices in discipline-specific content courses that include pedagogical practices in the K-12 teacher preparation curriculum. We are interested in candidates who are passionate about both biology and biology education research. The successful candidate will develop a strong, extramurally funded and collaborative research program that creates, extends, and/or explains the mechanism of effective approaches to biology education, K-20. The candidate should sustain an externally funded research program through scholarly activities that integrate undergraduate and graduate research experiences. We are seeking an individual who will successfully forge relationships central to teacher preparation, involving the Biology Department’s Teacher Certification Track, the NSU School of Education, the College of Science, Engineering and Technology, and local school districts and teachers.

The successful candidate will share departmental responsibilities with a dynamic and productive biology faculty. Some of the departmental responsibilities include assisting with curriculum development and assessment activities, participation on committees, undergraduate mentoring and participation in recruitment and retention activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Ph.D. in Biology or a closely related field with broad training in biology.
  2. A record of or potential for excellent scholarship.

Additional Considerations

  1. Experience teaching biology at the high school level.
  2. Demonstrated ability in securing external funding to support bioscience education initiatives.
  3. Demonstrated ability to develop communication and out-reach programs to local, state, and regional localities in K-12 bioscience education.
  4. Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate biology majors and/or pre-service teachers.
  5. Ability and willingness to teach biology graduate courses for the School of Education’s Mater of Arts in Teaching Program.
  6.  Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate research via mentoring of undergraduate research students and/or use of course based undergraduate research experiences (CURES).
  7. Demonstrated ability to effectively engage with students from diverse backgrounds.
