The role of Senior Underwriting is to ensure that quality, sustainable and profitable business is established for the product through the execution of a high degree of technical expertise. The role contributes to the execution of the Commercial Portfolio Strategy through the application of product, pricing, customer retention and acquisition strategies to deliver the targeted Insurance Trading Result (ITR) for the Product(s) in accordance to the Delegated Underwriting Authority (DUA).

The Senior Underwriting in collaboration with Distribution colleagues grows and develops key intermediary relationships, delivers exceptional customer service and facilitates multiline opportunities. The role collaborates across teams, removes blockages to performance and proactively looks for ways to simplify and improve the underwriting process.

The role is also responsible for the development of local Underwriting capability through the coaching and mentoring of Underwriters.

Key Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Monitor Portfolio against all budgeted KPI’s – Renewal & New Business MTD & YTD, GWP & ITR
  • Subject matter expert for the immediate team and senior referral point for product within the state
  • Assist in the development and execution of agreed Product Strategy
  • Monitor Underwriter adherence to agreed Product Underwriting Process
  • Monitor execution of strategy and agreed process in key Product areas – i.e. Surveys, Facultative Reinsurance, Processing to Mainframe
  • Facilitation of multi-line opportunities as appropriate.

Skills & Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years commercial experience in insurance, coupled with relevant qualifications
  • Minimum 10 years Commercial Fleet underwriting experience in insurance
  • Demonstrated knowledge of portfolio, underwriting and pricing practices and policies
  • Understanding of relevant Insurance products, industry, market environment, reinsurance structures and customer segment
  • Ability to underwrite at an advanced level in accordance with Risk Appetite, Delegated Underwriting Authority (DUA), Underwriting Guidelines and Business Licence  
  • Ability to use technical product knowledge to set terms and conditions and determines their acceptability in comparison to risk appetite for each customer.
