Who we are

In Melbourne, water is essential to our way of life.

As caretakers for Melbourne’s water cycle, we care for water, life and land throughout Melbourne: both its people and its biodiversity.

Each time you drink from the tap, flush a toilet, run through a backyard sprinkler, or kayak down the Yarra—we’re there. Primed and ready, quietly delivering some of the world’s cleanest water for over five million residents and wildlife that call Melbourne home —just as we have for over 130 years.

If you value making it count, diving in with curiosity, and doing what’s right, you're in the right place.

About the Role

Reporting to the Executive General Manager, this is a pivotal leadership role within the Service Futures group. As the General Manager, Service Strategy you will be responsible for leading our infrastructure and services planning to ensure our services are reliable and resilient in the face of change.

Leading a large team, you will drive the development and implementation of service strategies for all of our service lines including water, sewer, recycled water, catchment management, flooding and drainage. Focusing on enabling the enterprise to be resilient in the face of climate change and other potential shocks. You will ensure our strategies and plans are fit for purpose and drive action across the organisation’s value chain for the benefit of our customers, community and environment.

Key outcomes and activities include:

  • Responsible for developing an integrated 5-50+ year adaptive view of the infrastructure and non-infrastructure needs of the city (built and natural) to deliver our vision. Focusing the system performance and adaptive solutions rather than specific asset design
  • Ensuring consistency across all elements of strategy development and implementation
  • Implementing current strategies across our new strategic framework
  • Leading strategic enterprise goals related to Melbourne Water services
  • Creating strategies and service plans that allow MW to anticipate future challenges
  • Providing clarity of our needs and requirements to stakeholders in relation to infrastructure and non-infrastructure changes across our region.

About you:

  • Proven technical understanding or experience relevant to our service lines including water, sewer, recycled water, catchment management, flooding and drainage
  • Deep understanding of strategy and service plan development
  • Experience in building effective processes and decision-making frameworks
  • Extensive experience leading and managing high performing teams to success
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement skills with experience fostering cross-organisation and cross-industry collaboration
  • Tertiary Qualification in Engineering, Science, Urban Planning or relevant field
