About the position

This position is to carry out laboratory and field-based research on a wide variety of projects based around alpine and lowland aquatic ecosystems.

Duties will include: The identification of aquatic macroinvertebrates using molecular and traditional taxonomic methods; analysis of biological and environmental samples using a variety of molecular and chemical techniques in the laboratory; organising and conducting field work in alpine peatlands and other freshwater ecosystems; and undertaking administrative tasks for the laboratory and field, including updating and developing standard operating procedures (SOPs), risk assessments, and chemical inventories.

This position is for a 0.6-0.8 FTE (negotiable) Research Officer shared between the Biodiversity and Ecology Group led by Dr Michael Shackleton and the Biogeochemistry and Ecotoxicology Group led by Dr Aleicia Holland and Prof. Ewen Silvester.

 

Skills and Experience

To be considered for this position, you will have:

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in the relevant discipline, and evidence of participation in higher level study (honours) or experience relevant to discipline or professional area.
  • Evidence of experience of working in a laboratory
  • Ability to work effectively under limited supervision or independently.
  • Experience in the collection of samples and sample analysis including maintaining OHS and quality control and assurance.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with people from a diverse range of backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team in a cooperative and collegial manner.
  • Outstanding organisation skills, including capacity to independently organise and maintain a clean and working laboratory.
  • Demonstrated skills in molecular biology including extraction of DNA/RNA, qPCR/PCR, gel electrophoresis and/or library preparation for next-generation sequencing (e.g. Illumina Miseq)
  • Vehicle licence
