Director of Middle Clinical Experience
Position Summary
The Shared Discover Curriculum in the M2 year is based on integrated courses that teach basic, clinical and social sciences alongside real-world clinical experiences. These occur in the classroom, lab, simulation and authentic clinical locations throughout the Grand Rapids and Lansing areas.
Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Clinical Experiences, the Director of the M2 Curriculum is responsible for management and coordination of the programs of the M2 Curriculum and the Middle Clinical Experience, including:
- Serve as course director and lead faculty for the Middle Clinical Experience/M2 courses in summer, fall, and spring semesters:
- oversight of new or revised educational activities
- organization of the contributing faculty groups who meet regularly
- work collaboratively with the Office of Assessment and other key faculty to ensure alignment of course and assessment components
- implement university and college policies
- serve as instructor of record for the MCE/M2 courses, working within the Shared Discovery Curriculum’s Student Competence Committee framework
- As a course director, work closely with the other HM course directors to ensure alignment of processes and structures
- Chair the MCE/M2 Curriculum Development Group meetings and other stakeholder meetings as appropriate
- Engage with students, faculty, and staff when concerns occur
- Participate in ongoing continuous quality improvement of curricular offerings based on evaluation data and student performance data
- Teach undergraduate medical students. Teaching assignments can include formal course instruction, student advising, precepting individuals or small groups, and course, program or curriculum development
- Serve as a resource on educational methodology for other faculty
- Meet with students to discuss concerns, celebrate successes, and provide feedback and coaching
- Collaborate with the CHM Learning Societies on quality improvement efforts and provide faculty development to the faculty fellows
- Provide leadership to the M2/Middle Clinical Experience team, including the associate director and curriculum coordinator staff members
- Engage with clinical partners
- Work with staff to ensure M2/MCE curricular materials are posted and accessible to all who need them

Doctorate
Minimum Requirements
The successful candidate will have a terminal degree such as a Ph.D., MD, or DO in a medicine-related basic science or education-related discipline, teaching experience with multiple educational modalities.
Desired Qualifications
Experience working with faculty teams, and demonstrated effectiveness working with learners at a variety of performance levels.
Experience in any of the following areas is desirable:
- Curriculum design, learner assessment, and program evaluation
- Program level management
- Course director/Instructor of Record
- Faculty development
- Medical education scholarship
- Demonstrated collaborative approach to academic governance.
Academic department and rank will be determined based upon qualifications and experience.
