About the role
National Parks and Wildlife Service have a unique opportunity for 3 Project Officer’s to work as part of a team and contribute towards the conservation of the natural environment, flora, fauna and Aboriginal heritage.
One Project Officer (Koala Emergency Response up until 30 September 2026) supports the development of improved emergency wildlife response planning and implementation of fire actions in the NSW Koala Strategy 2022. Its focus is enhancing the protection of Koalas and their habitat in the NSW RFS Bush Fire Risk Management Planning process, the protections of Koalas and their habitat during hazard reduction burning and the development of a bushfire intelligence products that can be used to inform future hazard reduction burns where koala populations and habitat is present. The role also provides support to wildlife emergency response volunteers activated during wildfires, hazard reduction burns and other incidents.
The second Project Officer (Spatial Data up until 30 June 2026) supports the development of improved bushfire risk planning practice and tools for environmental and cultural assets across NSW. It coordinates the development, implementation, and evaluation of bushfire risk spatial projects and provides analytic and statistical data services for complex spatial projects in bushfire risk management and EcoHealth landscape fire metric reporting across NSW.
The third Project Officer (Bushfire Risk ongoing) supports the development of improved bushfire risk planning practice and tools for environmental and cultural assets across NSW. Its focus is the development and provision of knowledge and information products to enable individual Bush Fire Management Committees (BFMC) to develop their Bush Fire Risk Management Plans (BFRMP). It develops business tools to generate data and knowledge to support BFMC’s to make informed decisions on risk for environmental and cultural assets and prepares focus area asset profile reports and communicates these to BFMC’s via email and workshop presentations.
This role belongs to our Bushfire Risk and Evaluation Unit (BR&E). The Bushfire Risk and Evaluation Unit (BR&E) within the Conservation Programs Division leads the development of the NSW bushfire risk framework to embed environmental risk modelling into fire and land management planning and evaluation. The Unit improves the utility, accessibility and availability of fire and incident related data to enable program reporting and evaluation and develops improved bushfire risk assessment, analytics, forecasting, wildlife emergency response and planning tools.
About You
The Project Officers will work as part of a Unit which has a focus on improving the NSW bushfire risk framework to further embed environmental and cultural risk modelling into fire and land management planning and evaluation, including the development of wildlife emergency response and planning tools. Each role works extensively with stakeholders across government, the fire-fighting authorities and academic institutions to improve the tools and practice for environmental bushfire risk analysis and reporting. The roles and deliverables have a high focus across these stakeholder groups with each innovating to develop national best practice in wildlife emergency response, spatial data analysis and designing systems and tools to improve decision making by Bush Fire Management Committees.
Essential requirements -
- Appropriate tertiary qualifications or demonstrated equivalent, relevant professional experience in wildlife management, veterinary science, risk management, land, forest and fire management, ecological risk assessment and analysis.
- Experience in the use of Geographic Information Systems and enterprise data management systems to conduct ecological risk assessments.
- Project management skills and experience with an understanding of contemporary best practice in procurement, tendering and contract preparation, in managing project teams, consultants and contractors, and in applying environmental safety and risk management policies and systems.
- Demonstrated experience in implementing and reviewing strategic plans, policies and programs, and in providing strategic and operational advice and recommendations to senior management.
