About the department / center:
UDiscover is a two-week intensive summer program offered by the Center for Disabilities Studies designed for high school students with disabilities ages 16 – 22 that provides carefully orchestrated person-centered sequence of individualized and group activities that will result in creating a post-high school plan of action targeting goals for continuing education, and/or training, apprenticeship, internship or career outcomes. UDiscover also offers students an opportunity to develop skills essential for independent living and social connecting. 8 - 12 students are enrolled in the program.
This program offers an opportunity to test out college life and gain a better understanding of the skill sets necessary to achieve success in a higher education setting. Students will engage in seminars, worksite shadowing, and community-based learning experiences while learning how to juggle the day to day tasks of living away from home.
Role Description:
We are currently seeking undergraduate students to serve as Life Coaches for the 2-week program that will take place July 7 – 18. UDiscover Coaches live on campus and support students in all aspects of the program, including identifying and accomplishing goals, learning strategies for success, completing assignments, making informed decisions, reflecting on experiences, and navigating new experiences and challenges related to living on-campus. Coaches play a crucial role in providing students with a positive experience.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Attend workshops and group activities
- Support students during job shadows/informational interviews
- Prepare icebreaker/warm-up activities to start each day
- Plan and deliver evening social activities
- Lead team meetings each evening
- Take notes and pictures during job shadows/informational interviews
- Support students in completing FUNsignments and track progress in Canvas
- Support students in making decisions and working through challenges
- Mediate conflicts between students
- Rotating “on call” duties
Qualifications:
- available for the entire length of the two-week program as well as coaches training in June

- ability to learn and apply person-centered thinking
- embrace all aspects of diversity and inclusion
- complete a background check and Protection of Minors training
- experience working with people with disabilities preferred but not required
