About the department / center:
CEMA is an environmental data services center within the Department of Geography and Spatial Sciences (GSS), College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment (CEOE) at the University of Delaware. CEMA provides the following primary services to the state of Delaware and its citizens:
- Real-time Monitoring and Historical Environmental Data Repository
- Weather and Climate Outreach and Expertise
- Engineered Environmental Data Products and Solutions
CEMA houses the Office of the Delaware State Climatologist, Delaware Environmental Observing System, and the University of Delaware’s Satellite Receiving Station. CEMA serves as the most comprehensive observed environmental data resource for Delaware.
Role Description:
The CEMA center within the Department of Geography & Spatial Sciences is seeking a Environmental Data Support Intern who will work closely with CEMA staff to review and analyze existing data, develop new datasets, and create visualizations for sharing with external partners and the public, in general. Most tasks will require working with various forms of digital data (e.g. CSV, TXT, JSON, netCDF) as well as analog data (e.g. weather maps) to develop a summary database that can be used for further analysis. Additional tasks will be assigned as needed and will include documentation of data and procedures, testing internal data services, and developing website content and outreach materials. GIS-based tasks may include use of ArcGIS Pro or development of StoryMaps and Dashboards in ArcOnline. Strong organizational and communication skills are desired with a preference for an individual that has a strong interest or background in Meteorology or Physical Geography and experience in programming.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assist with the development of software and analytical procedures for processing environmental data
- Analyze weather maps, climate data, and other meteorological information resources
- Review and update climate and other environmental datasets
- Perform literature reviews of peer-reviewed articles and other scientific publications
- Review and update information on websites
- Assist CEMA staff with other scientific duties, as needed
Qualifications:
- Highly dependable.
- Experience in analyzing meteorological maps and data
- Ability to use online productivity resources (e.g. Google Apps) and familiarity with Microsoft Excel
- Basic proficiency in scientific programming languages such as Python or R
- Basic GIS experience (e.g. ArcGIS Pro, ArcOnline, QGIS)
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Interest in collaboration or team-based tasks
