About the Role
As Senior Debt Management Officer, you will manage Council’s day-to-day debt activities, including hardship support, repayment arrangements and recovery actions.
You’ll provide expert advice to customers on rates and sundry debt matters while collaborating with internal stakeholders to deliver responsive, business aligned debt management services.
What You’ll deliver
- End‑to‑end debt recovery outcomes, effectively managing overdue and long‑term debts through timely intervention, escalation and compliant recovery actions.
- Targeted recovery and communication campaigns, leading annual SMS, notice and demand strategies to improve debt collection performance.
- Expert hardship and compliance management, overseeing hardship applications, penalty interest, legal costs and escalated recovery matters with empathy and consistency.
- Strong systems, controls and insights, ensuring accurate ledgers, reconciliations, reporting, and continuous improvement across debt management platforms and processes.
- Capability uplift and collaboration, supporting, training and coordinating teams and stakeholders to deliver best‑practice, customer‑focused debt management services.
What You’ll Bring
- Relevant qualifications or extensive experience in accounting, finance, legal, business or a related discipline, with proven success in a similar role.
- Strong local government expertise, including experience across rates, revenue, debt management, finance or legal functions.
- Sound legislative and technical knowledge of local government legislation, debt management practices and recovery processes, including working with solicitors.
- Well‑developed communication and negotiation skills, enabling effective engagement with customers, stakeholders and government agencies at all levels.
- Customer‑focused financial capability, demonstrating accuracy, accountability, sound judgement and a commitment to delivering balanced, high‑quality outcomes.
- Willingness to undergo pre-employment background checks including National Criminal History Check, Working with Children Check and Eligibility to Work check.
