Pay Range:  $16.43 per hour.

Position Summary: Oversees the Student Media Center, inclusive of the student online newspaper and the student video production team. Plans student-centered editorial content with student editors and staff, including assignment of stories, photos, cartoons and videos, and setting of deadlines. Approves and posts content on Student Media Center website. Conducts regular staff meetings and monitors staff progress. Collaborates with advertising and social media staff regarding content and image presentation. Serves as spokesperson for the Student Media Center. Hires staff with assistance of Student Media Coordinator.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Must be enrolled in at least nine (9) credit hours at JCCC each semester and maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA
  • Successful completion of or concurrent enrollment in JOUR 122, News Writing and Reporting. (Transcript required if not taken at JCCC.)
  • Must demonstrate writing/editing skills
  • Applicant may be given a writing test during interview
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working on a student publication
  • Knowledge of Associated Press style
  • Completion of a minimum of six (6) hours of college-level English or journalism courses (JOUR 120 Mass Media & Society, JOUR 127 Introduction to Broadcasting, JOUR 145 Photojournalism, JOUR 227 Basic Video Production). (Transcript required if not taken at JCCC)
  • Previous supervisory experience

Position Details: Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Writes regular personal column and is prepared to create and/or edit stories and content as needed.
  • Monitors story assignment progress, deadline adherence and content produced by staff, then approves and posts content in a timely fashion. 
  • Conducts regular staff meetings to build a foundation of teamwork. 
  • Hires Student Media Center staff with assistance of coordinator.
