Job Summary/Basic Function

 

The Director for the Center of Student Engagement and Belonging is a dynamic and visionary leader responsible for providing strategic direction and oversight of the holistic student engagement experience. Specifically, this individual oversees the Office of Student Involvement and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. This individual will serve as a champion for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, fostering a campus environment that values and celebrates all backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences within the student body. They oversee robust engagement programs, new student orientation programming, student organization advising, and major campus events.

The Director for the Center of Student Engagement and Belonging has an active role in the general administration of the Center for Student Engagement. The Director of Campus Life reports directly to the Dean of Campus Life in the Division of Student Life.

Essential Responsibilities:


Leadership and Strategic Planning:
• Provide visionary leadership to create and sustain an inclusive campus environment that promotes student engagement and fosters a sense of belonging.
• Develop and direct the campus life programming calendar campus-wide.
• Provide oversight and assistance with leadership retreats and workshops through the lens of equity and inclusion.
• Leverage data-driven assessment techniques to continuously improve and drive informed decisions that align with the University’s and Division’s strategic plans.


Serve as a Diversity and Inclusion Advocacy:
• Serve as a visible advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives across campus.
• Oversee the design and facilitation of identity-based training and workshops on cultural competency, social identity, inclusive spaces, equity, and various social justice topics for students, faculty, and staff.
• Oversees and assists with the planning and execution of cultural heritage month celebrations, InclusiveMU programming, and the Annual MLK Celebration.
• Create platforms for open dialogues, crucial conversations, and proactive feedback mechanisms that support diverse student experiences and viewpoints on social justice matters.
• Oversee and provide dedicated support to the Multicultural Scholars Program.
• Assist with teaching and enhancing the impact of the MSP course curriculum outcomes.
• Serve as a campus ombudsman, actively addressing conflicts while promoting a culture of respect and inclusivity.
• Support students needing to report and navigate bias incidents.


Staff Supervision and Development:
• Provide leadership, guidance, coaching, and mentorship to an assistant director, four coordinators, and two graduate assistants in the Office of Diversity & Inclusion and the Office of Student Involvement.
• Share oversight of the Center for Student Engagement, which includes resources, programming, and services for students.


Student Engagement and Communication:
• Oversee programs and initiatives that transform student engagement, involvement, and leadership in alignment with the Division of Student Life’s Wellness Model.
• Provide leadership, direction, and oversight in the comprehensive planning and execution of Saints Nation Orientation programming to engage new students in collaboration with the Center of Student Engagement team and relevant campus partners.
• Manage the engagement platform and work collaboratively with the Campus Event Management team.
• Optimize the Anthology Engage platform to facilitate the program approval process for student organizations and departments.
• Drive engagement through intentional redundancy of communication, including social media, dynamic websites, impactful digital signage, and using Slack to its fullest potential.


Campus-wide Collaboration:
• Collaborate with student organizations, faculty, staff, and administrative offices to embed diversity and inclusion principles into various aspects of campus life.
• Provide oversight, facilitation, and assistance with the development of programming and educational workshops to increase campus awareness pertaining to social justice-related topics.
• Lead and enhance campus diversity initiatives, university practices, and policies to ensure an inclusive campus environment.
• Serve on the President’s Diversity & Inclusion, Homecoming, and Orientation steering committees.
• Perform other assigned duties and maintain a highly visible profile in various university-wide events, athletic events, and initiatives.


Administrative and Outreach Responsibilities:
• Effectively manage budgets for both offices, ensuring fiscal responsibility and strategic allocation of resources to support diversity and inclusion initiatives.
• Engage actively in recruitment and retention initiatives.
• Provide oversight and assistance with summer camps established with strategic partnerships.

Minimum Qualifications

•Exemplary leadership skills in professional development, student engagement, leadership and development, and student organization programming and implementation.
• Experience in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion or Social Justice work.
• Ability to handle multiple responsibilities concurrently, balancing long-term projects with immediate and urgent needs in a fast-paced and innovative environment.
• Ability to plan and execute programs and services based on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion or Social justice work.
• Skilled in cultivating and maintaining strategic partnerships and relationships both within and beyond Student Life and the University.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• High level of competency in the use and adoption of technology to accomplish the above goals.
• Master’s degree in student development or related field required.
• 5-7 years of progressive experience in Student Engagement, Student Leadership, Diversity and Inclusion, event planning and student organization advising.
• 3 years of experience supervising professional staff and providing performance feedback.
