Summary

Provide academic and career advising for students in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and students from other departments pursuing Biomedical Engineering Minors. Assist students with their course schedules, degree schedules and the transferring of credits from other universities/colleges. Evaluate previous course work regarding degree requirements for the Department of Biomedical Engineering undergraduate programs. Provide support as equipment manager and lab coordinator, assist curriculum binder process.

Responsibilities and Essential Duties

  • In collaboration with other advising staff, advise students in biomedical engineering baccalaureate program, biomedical engineering minor and providing guidance in all aspects of their programs of study.
  • Assist students with semester planning and course registration conflicts, including filled sections, waivers, wait lists, etc.
  • Promote student success by collaborating with campus services including Career Services, Student Mental Health and Well-being, Waino Wahtera Center for Student Success, writing and learning centers, etc. to assist students in areas such as career advising, study skills and time management.
  • Review transfer courses from other colleges for applicability to the biomedical engineering degree requirements and incorporate into BME student academic plans.
  • Carefully review degree audits, graduation requirements and previous coursework for BME major program.
  • Assist with creation of departmental marketing and promotional materials such as undergraduate and graduate program brochures.
  • Cooperate with the Registrar’s Office in maintaining student records.
  • Coordinate and participate in First-Year Orientation, and conduct first-year advising meetings.
  • Disseminate current academic policies and procedures.
  • Participate in program assessment and provide support for accreditation of degree programs.
  • Assist with the creation and updates of department web pages, flowcharts and other advising material.
  • Participate in the selection process for scholarships and awards to department students.
  • Participate in appropriate departmental and university level committees.
  • Meet with prospective students when faculty is not available.
  • Participate in university, regional, and state-level recruiting and outreach events.
  • Manage department laboratory equipment.
  • Coordinate lab access and safety training.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

 

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures

• Bachelor’s degree

Required Experience

• One year professional or administrative experience.
• Experience working in undergraduate higher education student services, or closely related area.
• Experience in advising undergraduate students.
• Experience using personal computers and basic software packages including word processing and spreadsheet software.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Master’s degree.
• One year professional STEM experience.
• Experience using desktop publishing, BANNER software, Webfocus, Aspire, and Visio.

• Superior interpersonal and written/oral communication skills.
• Excellent individual, small group and large group presentation skills.
• Demonstrated ability to use judgment when dealing with confidential information.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

  • Experience using degree audit reporting software.
  • Demonstrated success in working with persons with a wide variety of personal characteristics and viewpoints.

The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $62,000; however, the final salary will depend on experience and qualifications.
