Our Behavioral Health, Nurse Practitioners work in collaboration and consultation with physicians, staff RNs, and other health care professionals, providing holistic, compassionate care to inpatients and their families and empowers them to achieve their best health. They are a member of the hospital interdisciplinary team and facilitate continuum of care for patients from admission through the discharge process. The Behavioral Health, Nurse Practitioner’s patient load is managed to allow providers to truly focus on their patients’ health care.
About this position
The behavioral health Nurse Practitioner will deliver specialized care and treatment to individuals primarily within the Behavioral Health Unit and as needed on the Medical Floors and the Emergency Department as requested by the referring provider group. Practice is in collaboration with and at the direction of the Inpatient and Consult Behavioral Health Physicians.
What we’ll expect from you -
- Assembles a complete medical database, including health history, history of chief complaint, physical examination upon customer admission for selected customers, and documents the findings in the customer record.
- Assesses selected customers using physically and technologically derived data, including the evaluation of diagnostic test results, and documents assessments in the customer record. Recognizes normal and abnormal findings.
- In consultation with physician collaborators, establishes a diagnosis, plans medical therapeutics and interventions, and makes referrals to other disciplines based on the medical database.
- Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapeutics, and therapies within the collaborative agreement established with a physician(s) collaborator and based on established competencies.
- Evaluates and analyzes customers' responses to disease processes and therapeutic interventions, and determines the effectiveness of care and the need to alter the plan of care.
- Communicates effectively with customers' families and other key customer groups.
- Presents selected customer assessments, diagnoses and plans of care during medical team conferences and/or rounds.
- Collaborates with members of the health care team to implement and evaluate holistic customer care delivery.
- Serves as a resource to members of the health care team to facilitate customer delivery by using an indepth behavioral health knowledge base.
- Provides customer care by effectively using resources and participating in efforts to minimize costs and prevent unnecessary duplication.
- Documents customer care and communicates with other care givers, including utilizing the electronic health record.
- Provides the necessary information for billing for services provided by the NP and being compliant with the documentation necessary for that service billed.
- Provides leadership and actively participates in the assessment, development and implementation and evaluation of quality improvement programs.

Education
- Master’s or higher degree in Nursing required.
- Certification prior to the Masters’ degree requirement and current practice as a Nurse Practitioner in their area of specialization or documentation of current competency.Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Licensure/Certification(s) Mandatory
- Current licensure as RN in State of Minnesota
- Current registration as a nurse practitioner with the MN Board of Nursing,or pending certification of a nurse practitioner for up to six months after completion of a successful Nurse Practitioner educational program. Failure to pass the certification examination will result in immediate suspension of privileges. Privileges will be reinstated upon evidence of successful completion of the certification examination.
- Current certification as a Nurse Practitioner by a national nurse certification organization acceptable to the MN Board of Nursing:
American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP)
American Association of Critical Care Nurses Certification Corporation (AACN)
American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
National Certification Corporation for Obstetric, Gynecological, and Neonatal Nursing Specialties (NCC)
Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB)
Hospice and Palliative Certification
- Required: Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners with prescriptive authority must be licensed, certified and/or registered as a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner by the State of Minnesota.
- Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certificate
- Current prescription and collaborative practice agreement with at least one collaborating physician
