Job Summary
The MSSQL Database Administrator works within a team environment to maintain, optimize, and provide technical expertise for enterprise and business level databases.
The incumbent oversees Enterprise and/or Business Databases acting as a Primary Administrator for multiple servers and versions of database software and support tools which host data for enterprise and business applications along with custom data warehouses, etc. The primary database systems in our environment include Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and PostgreSQL. The incumbent also serves as backup or secondary administrator on other database systems performing only some of the duties outlined for those specific databases.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate
$58,000 - $72,000 annual
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Any one or combination totaling two years from the following categories:
a. College course work in Information Technology (IT), IT Management, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
- 60 semester hours or Associate's degree equals one year
- 90-120 semester hours or Bachelor's degree equals two years
b. Progressively more responsible work experience in a database administration related profession - At least six (6) months of experience performing any of the following:
a. Database administration in the MS SQL Server 2019 and newer platforms
b. Database or server monitoring tools for health and performance monitoring
c. Windows System Administration on Microsoft Windows Server 2019 or newer version with Windows Failover Cluster
d. System administration duties for assigned databases and servers including installation, configuration, and patch management systems using query/reporting tools such as SQL Server Management Studio - Experience with ITSM, ticketing and issue tracking
Preferred Qualifications
- Technically focused area of study from a higher education institution.
- The following experience:
a. supporting software applications using MSSQL databases, especially higher education administrative systems
b. with Windows operating system script languages (such as PowerShell) for systems and database administration
c. with Windows system administration with Windows failover cluster and advance firewall configuration
d. with clustering, load balancing, mirroring, log shipping, and replication technologies to provide high availability systems
e. Understanding of common system administration technologies used by database applications such as backups firewall settings, and event monitoring. - Working knowledge of relational data structures
- The following skills:
a. strong customer service skills
b. strong project, analysis, research, and problem-solving skills
c. excellent interpersonal communication skills - Ability to:
a. work independently and in a collaborative team environment
b. leverage Microsoft Word, Visio, and Excel
c. learn quickly new technologies and changing business requirements
d. analyze and communicate detailed complex technical concepts verbally and in writing to all audiences
Work Hours
Core Hours: 8:00am-4:30pm Monday through Friday; occasional weekend and evening hours as business needs dictate

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of applicant materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score.
