About the Role: 

As a Senior Veterinarian in the National Programs and Engagement team, you will manage poultry health functions relevant to animal biosecurity in NSW, and contribute to other important programs including NSW’s national animal biosecurity commitments and the H5N1 avian influenza biosecurity preparedness and response programs.

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer, our ideal candidate will have extensive experience working with commercial poultry and other avian species as a veterinary professional, a strong understanding of the animal biosecurity framework in Australia, have outstanding management and communication skills, be adept at stakeholder engagement, and thrive in a collaborative work environment. 

Key responsibilities include, but not limited to: 

  • Coordinate poultry health functions within NSW DPIRD including management of avian notifiable disease detections, provision of technical advice relevant to biosecurity aspects of commercial poultry and avian species across the department, and ongoing engagement with key industry stakeholders.
  • Prepare and coordinate timely strategic advice, research, information and reports relevant to animal biosecurity policy in NSW, with a focus on but not limited to poultry.
  • Work within a collaborative team to ensure that the animal biosecurity program aligns with the strategic objectives of the group and with our legislative requirements and national obligations.  
  • Participate in NSW’s emergency animal disease hotline roster during business and after-hours.

Essential Requirements

  • Tertiary qualifications in Veterinary Science, registerable in NSW
  • Experience as a veterinary professional working with commercial poultry and other avian species
  • Experience in biosecurity risk management
  • Current NSW Driver Licence
  • Adept at using Microsoft Office apps and electronic record keeping
