The Department of Regional NSW, to become the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development from 1 July 2024, is seeking a dynamic and experienced senior executive to lead our Fisheries and Forestry Group across the state.

About you

This is a unique opportunity to make a real difference. As the Deputy Secretary of Fisheries and Forestry, you will lead teams spread across regional NSW, pivotal in delivering industry development, regulatory compliance, policy, legislative reform, regulatory compliance and programs to create profitable and sustainable primary industries.  You will build strong networks with key decision-makers at all levels of industry and government, work closely with the Deputy Secretary Agriculture and Biosecurity and other leaders across the new department.

You will be a strategic thinker with a strong understanding of fisheries and forestry. You will be a dynamic and inspirational leader who can motivate, support, and empower others to achieve outcomes. Your strong communication and astute strategic planning will be pivotal in negotiating outcomes that will attract and secure new investments, bolstering the resilience and diversity of the fisheries and forestry sectors. Furthermore, you will have extensive experience in natural resource management and be financially savvy leader with a keen eye for efficiency and maximising the public benefit and impact of allocated resources.

As a key leader, you will serve as a trusted advisor to the Secretary and Minister, with a particular emphasis on fishery and forestry. Active engagement with external stakeholders, industry representatives, and peak bodies will be intrinsic to your role, as you represent the department in crucial forums and foster effective collaboration for the betterment of regional and rural communities.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in natural resource management and/or relevant primary industries and/or economics, business/finance and/or other relevant discipline.
  • Experience in a senior role in government and/or the corporate sector.
  • Strong knowledge of the fisheries and forestry sectors and the risks and issues confronting them.
