Senior Policy Officer

  • Full-time Temporary opportunity available up to 18 month term contract
  • Location: Willing to consider candidates across all NSW locations. Preference will be given to candidates based regionally, with a focus on Queanbeyan, Armidale, Dubbo and Coffs Harbour 
  • Clerk Grade 9/10 Salary From $120,859 plus super and leave loading

About the role

The Senior Policy Officer provides strategic policy and legislative advice, undertaking complex research and analysis for policy development, coordination, implementation, and review. They identify emerging issues, develop evidence-based solutions, and offer expert advice to stakeholders for effective policy implementation. This role will have a focus on informing decision-making relating matters of Native Title and Indigenous Land Use Agreements (ILUAs).

The Legislation & Reform team develops and drives cross cutting policy priorities through Cabinet and legislative processes, providing policy leadership and engaging with key stakeholders across the NSW Government and externally.

About You 

To be successful in this role, our ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Demonstrated experience in research, analysis and reviewing complex policy issues, identifying emerging issues, developing evidence-based options, and recommended solutions to resolve problems and mitigate risk.
  • Understanding and ability to interpret complex policy and provide advice to relevant stakeholders to implement cross-departmental initiatives.
  • Enable the development of policy and related documents through Cabinet and parliamentary processed preparing correspondence, written reports, publications and briefs.

Key Knowledge and Experience

  • Knowledge of the machinery of Government, including Cabinet and legislative processes. 
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret a wide variety of legislation and expertise in policy development, implementation and review. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Native Title Act 1993 and its application in practice is desirable.

The Policy, Reform and Evidence Branch leads cross cutting policy development for the Department, with expertise in complex policy and legislative reforms, regional development policy, data and evidence, and regional workforce attraction, development and retention policy and programs.
