The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) is seeking a Senior Policy Officer to join our Strategy and Regulatory Policy Division in Agriculture and Biosecurity. This is your opportunity to make a real impact on sustainability, biosecurity, and the future of NSW’s primary industries.

  • Temporary Full Time, (2 year contract) 35 hours per week
  • Location: Willing to consider candidates across all NSW locations. Preference will be given to candidates based regionally.
  • Clerk Grade 9/10 – salary from $129,464 to $142,665 per annum (FTE) plus super and leave loading

 About the Role
As a Senior Policy Officer, you will provide high-level strategic advice, lead complex projects, and develop policies and that shape NSW’s position on primary industry matters, particularly biosecurity. A key responsibility of the role will be supporting the delivery of the NSW Biosecurity Action Plan 2026, including the development and delivery of a new package of regulatory guidance and other material to help people, businesses and land managers understand and comply with their biosecurity duties.

You will:

  • Lead the development of policy initiatives and projects aligned with government priorities.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to deliver effective policy solutions.
  • Prepare briefs, discussion papers, policy advice for Ministerial and departmental requests.
  • Develop regulatory guidance and material to build understanding and support compliance in relation to the Biosecurity Act 2015.   
  • Undertake research and analysis to inform decision-making and evaluate policy outcomes.
  • Contribute to the Division’s cabinet, legislative, and regulatory programs.

About You
We’re looking for a strategic thinker and strong communicator who thrives on solving complex policy challenges. You’ll bring:

  • Proven experience in policy development and analysis, with the ability to interpret legislation and assess impacts.
  • Excellent collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills to build strong relationships across government and key stakeholders.
  • Ability to develop materials that clearly explain complex concepts and policy to individuals and groups.
  • A solid understanding of government processes, including legislative procedures.
  • Broad knowledge of primary industry issues and the relevant policy and legislative landscape.
