NSW Resources is responsible for supporting and growing safe and sustainable exploration and mining in NSW. NSW Resources sets the strategic policy for the state’s mineral and petroleum resources, assesses and determines applications for mineral and petroleum titles for exploration activities and extractive uses, provides high-quality geoscientific information to support decision making and investment, and regulates work health and safety and mine rehabilitation to ensure safe and environmentally sustainable mining.
About the Role
As a Senior Mine Safety Officer (Survey & Geospatial), you will provide specialist leadership in mine surveying, spatial information, and subsidence monitoring.
You’ll carry out statutory regulatory functions, ensure compliance with legislation, and help maintain high safety standards across mine sites.
You will also manage key historical and current datasets, lead projects that strengthen systems and processes, and contribute to incident investigations and assessments where spatial expertise is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
In this role, you will:
- Ensure compliance across mining operations - Conduct compliance and enforcement activities under NSW work health and safety law at mining operations with a focus on mine survey related provisions of the WHS (Mines & Petroleum Sites) Regulation 2022.
- Lead improvements to internal geospatial and subsidence monitoring data systems - Deliver projects to maintain and enhance datasets, systems, and processes related to mine survey, spatial information and subsidence monitoring.
- Contribute knowledge and expertise – Improve the knowledge and understanding of spatial practices and technologies across the business, such as remote monitoring, UAV, GNSS, GIS systems etc.
- Support operational safety assessments and incident response - Participate in inspections, assessments and investigations, particularly where surveying or geospatial expertise is required.
- Engage and influence key stakeholders - Consult with mine operators, worker representatives, government agencies, community groups and professional bodies as required to improve work health and safety outcomes where spatial information is integral. Including, representing the Resources Regulator at industry forums and working groups.
- Provide custodianship of current and historical mine survey information - Oversee, maintain and improve the historical mine survey archive, including stored hardcopy, and the current digital catalogue for operating mines.
Essential Requirements:

- Tertiary qualification in surveying or equivalent and eligibility to be registered as a mine surveyor in NSW.
- Must be able to work on weekends and backshifts and respond to incidents out of normal business hours on a rostered basis.
- Hold and maintain a current Class C driver licence.
- Compliance with pre-employment probity screening is mandatory and a condition of engagement.
- Compliance with the Resources Regulator Pecuniary Interests in the Regulated Sector policy is mandatory.
- Appointment and ongoing assignment is subject to the satisfactory participation in ongoing health screening.

About You
To be successful in the role you will have;
- The ability to gain trust and confidence of mine operators and workers, through the development of cooperative and open relationships.
- Experience in working in a dynamic environment, being able to positively respond to unexpected changes and effectively re-prioritising deliverables will be highly valued.
- Proven experience as a mine surveyor with underground experience highly regarded.
- Eligibility for registration as a Mine Surveyor under the Surveying and Spatial Information Act 2002.
- Strong knowledge and capability in GIS technologies, subsidence monitoring methods, and mine surveying standards.
- An understanding of mining legislation, industry systems, and auditing methodologies.
- Advanced communication skills, with the ability to be able to translate complex technical information for diverse audiences.
- Strong project management and documentation capability.
- An ability to collaborate across internal teams and industry.
- A high-level of integrity, professionalism, and commitment to safety.
