About the Role

This research based role contributes specialist entomology expertise to projects that inform the Department’s strategic and operational priorities with an emphasis on Biosecurity outcomes. It is responsible for designing and delivering research projects, conducting experimental work, analysing data and maintaining strong scientific and industry networks. The role will also support commercial and Biosecurity preparedness efforts through support of entomology diagnostics and insectary facilities management. The position ensures emerging knowledge, research outcomes and technical developments are translated into insights that support evidence‑based policy, program development and departmental decision making.

About You

As our ideal candidate, you will bring:

  • Advanced research capability — able to design, lead and deliver research from concept to publication, with preference for candidates with expertise in horticultural, post-harvest, or fruit fly based entomology.  
  • Hands‑on experimental experience — establishing trials, collecting field and lab data, and managing research workflows 
  • Scientific communication expertise — translating findings into clear reports, presentations and stakeholder updates 
  • Collaborative engagement — working effectively with colleagues, industry partners, regulators and stakeholders 
  • Strong organisational skills — balancing time and resources to deliver effective research and diagnostic outcomes

Essential criteria:

  • Degree Qualifications as relevant to the role e.g. Agriculture, Science or Veterinary Science or related field
  • NSW Drivers Licence and the ability and willingness to travel
