In the Senior Policy Officer role, you will contribute to significant policy and legislative reform initiatives, including supporting the Department’s legislative agenda and the development and introduction of a Bill. You will prepare high-quality advice, briefings, submissions and materials for Cabinet, Parliamentary and Ministerial processes, while working closely with policy, legal, operational and stakeholder teams. 

 

Your day to day may look like: 

  • Researching, analysing and reviewing complex policy issues, including identifying emerging issues and developing evidence-based options and practical recommendations. 
  • Providing strategic policy and legislative advice to support Department and Government priorities. 
  • Preparing high-quality briefs, submissions, correspondence, reports, Ministerial materials and Cabinet-related documents. 
  • Supporting the development, coordination, implementation and review of policies and legislative reform initiatives. 
  • Working with policy, legal and operational teams to develop timely policy responses within constrained timeframes. 
  • Synthesising outcomes from public consultation processes and integrating stakeholder feedback into policy and legislative proposals. 
  • Building and maintaining effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support sound policy development and decision-making. 
  • Monitoring, evaluating and reporting on policy and program development to support quality outcomes. 

 

We are looking for: 

  • Experience supporting policy development, legislative reform or government decision-making processes. 
  • Knowledge of machinery of government, including Cabinet and Parliamentary processes. 
  • Strong research, analysis and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop evidence-based options and recommendations. 
  • Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to prepare briefs, submissions, reports, correspondence and speeches. 
  • The ability to interpret legislation, policy and stakeholder feedback to support practical policy outcomes. 
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams and manage competing perspectives. 
  • Strong organisational and project management skills, with the ability to manage deadlines and deliver quality work in a changing environment. 
  • Sound judgement, integrity and professionalism when working with sensitive or complex matters.
