Job Summary:

The Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services is looking for a professional and compassionate Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) to assist the Director of Nursing (DON) in operating the Nursing Department of the Arizona State Veteran Home in Yuma.

In this position you will oversee nursing practices of all nursing roles within the home including scheduling and assigning duties to nursing personnel. You will establish and manage facility-wide nursing care indicators, ensuring the facility complies with federal and state guidelines governing the outcome of Veteran/Member centered-care while incorporating a cultural focus. You will also actively participate in the Arizona Management System (AMS) to learn, implement and monitor AMS methods while utilizing AMS concepts and tools for problem solving and continuous work/process improvements and efficiencies.

Job Duties:
  • Supervises and manages scheduled staff to ensure proper use of resources and adequate staff coverage
  • Takes necessary actions to train and supervise staff to ensure Veteran/Member care standards of care are met
  • Applies knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements and institutes corrective action whenever deficiencies are identified
  • Participates and assumes leadership roles, as assigned on committees and task forces
  • Participates in Human Resources activities related to interviewing, selection, performance evaluations, coaching/counseling and administering disciplinary actions, as necessary
  • Responds to and takes appropriate action regarding emergent issues that involve allegations of abuse, neglect/mistreatment of residents, fire or police involvement, and elopements
  • Conveys consistent, effective communication with the DON and/or Administrator
  • Provides assistance on units and may act on behalf of the DON in their absence
  • Actively participates in the AMS process
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

  • Clinical management of moderate to complex medical conditions found within a skilled nursing facility
  • Employee management issues related to specific demands of a nursing home environment
  • Relevant regulations as pertained to the nursing home, including Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA) , Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other standards
  • Regulatory requirements and how to complete resident assessments
  • Human Resources functions to include recruiting, training, coaching/counseling and taking disciplinary actions
  • Designing and implementing systems related to the workflow, scheduling, quality assurance functions and tracking the frequency of quality indicators within the nursing home environment

Skill in:

  • Communicating with a variety of members and staff; effective use of English in both oral and written form
  • Managing a variety of systems and functions to include human resources and nursing practices
  • Assessing and planning appropriate medical interventions
  • Problem solving in areas of complex or multi-faceted issues that are related to nursing care and practices

  • Establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships at all organizational levels

Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • Must possess an active license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Arizona
  • Must be able to obtain and retain an AZDPS Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • This position requires the ability to drive on State business. Requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver's license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on State business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see A.AC. R2-10-207.11).
  • Current Negative TB skin test (Mantoux skin test) within the last twelve months or a written statement from a physician, physician’s assistant or a registered nurse practitioner indicating freedom from tuberculosis, if in the past has had a positive skin test or tuberculosis
