PSYCHIATRIC NURSE - SKILLBRIDGE

*Must be able to complete a minimum of 8 weeks and up to a maximum of 6 months SkillBridge Internship*

*Must be separating from the Military*

*Has served at least 180 days on active duty*

*This position is an Internship DOD SkillBridge position*

*This Internship can be up to 6 months depending on Service Member's availability*

Please Note: While this is a SkillBridge Internship position, if selected for full time employment, this role will offer rotating schedules to include any day of the week to meet the needs of the hospital and its patients.

Additionally, as a full time employee this position offers 12 hour work schedules, shift differentials and guaranteed shifts.  

Job Summary:

The role of Psychiatric Nurse will entail direct psychiatric and medical care to patients of the Arizona State Hospital.

Job Duties:

• Providing orientation, supervision, and on the job training to new employees (RN's, LPN's); assisting in evaluation of job performance; and acts as a resource person for unit employees

• Performing all aspects of patient care including continuous improvement of the patient’s experience, clinical outcomes, and promoting a healthy work environment

• Transcribing doctor’s orders, medication and chart review, administering medication and treatments, counting accountable medication, assisting doctor in sick call with nursing input

• Providing direct psychiatric and medical nursing care to patients; attending group activities, assisting patients with activities of daily living; and observing of behavior and physical status

• Documenting in patient records, completing nursing assessments, summaries and other documentation as needed

• Providing professional and skilled nursing care for patients in collaboration the physician and other disciplines

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge:

• Psychiatric nursing and general principles of medical, adolescent, geriatric, and forensic nursing

• Basic computer programs and software related to the health record

• Effective communication techniques, both verbal and written

• Nursing process in the development of patient care plans

• Pharmacology and infection control

• Patient rights and responsibilities

• Hospital policies and procedures

• Psychiatric rehabilitation

Skills:

• Enter patient information regarding assessment, observation, progress notes, medications, etc into the electronic health record

• Communicating with patients, nursing staff, members of the treatment team and other departments

• Provide guidance/ mentor-ship/clinical leadership for paraprofessional nursing staff

• Assessment of patients' physical and mental status and patients' needs

• Facilitating psychiatric rehabilitation and other educational groups

• Assessment of staff skill mix to meet patient needs and acuity

• Clinical supervision of paraprofessional nursing staff

• Documenting observations and interventions

• Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment

• Administer medications in a safe manner

• Providing education to patients and staff

• Therapeutic interventions

Selective Preference(s):

• The ideal candidate will have experience with psychiatric patients

Pre-Employment Requirements:

• A State Hospital employee must be able to obtain a valid Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card pursuant to A.R.S. § 41-1758.07

• This position requires incumbent to have and maintain a current Arizona RN license

• Must be able to obtain and maintain CPR and NVCI certifications

Driving Requirements:

• Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver license record checks, required to maintain acceptable driving records and complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.11)

• Requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver license appropriate to the assignment
