Job Summary:

This position works under the general supervision of a certified/registered therapist and will supervise cafe/gift shop patient workers while establishing and maintaining a safe, orderly, and therapeutic environment. This position will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day tasks that employees (patient workers) perform such as prepping the cafe, prepping food, making beverages, and serving customers. This position will also be responsible for purchasing supplies and maintaining inventory for the cafe/gift shop. Will occasionally need to drive to local stores to purchase items needed for the cafe; escorts patients to and from care units; prepare materials and equipment for therapeutic activities; consult with supervisor presenting and resolving difficult problems or questions relating to discussing plans and actions to be taken; confer with other practitioners and technical experts in own field of specialization in order to broaden knowledge, acquire specific information, or obtain advice or consultation.

This position also leads, instructs, and encourages patients in the program of individual and group activities of a physical, social, vocational and cultural nature such as indoor and outdoor games and sports, arts and crafts, music, parties, hobby shop work and special interest clubs. Observes and records an individual’s response to therapy; alters approach to or activities of individual to better reach the goals as determined; assists in the design and construction of adaptive, assistive and supportive equipment for use of patients to improve motor functioning, strengthen and support muscles, or prevent malfunction or deformity; interacts personally on a face-to-face basis with patients in a helping role in accordance with goals and objectives of a therapeutic program; instructs patients in special exercises to improve patient’s dexterity, balance, concentration or other significant physical or mental capability; confers with other members of the treatment or therapy team discussing, planning, and determining courses of action in client care, treatment, or case determination. May be required to drive up to a 12 passenger van & complete the hospital van safety training program.

Job Duties:

− Will supervise cafe/gift shop patient workers while establishing and maintaining a safe, orderly, and therapeutic environment.
− This position will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day tasks that employees (patient workers) perform such as prepping the cafe, prepping food, making beverages, and serving customers.
− This position will also shop for supplies for the cafe/gift shop/rehab program and ensure supplies are available and organized.
− Interacts on a face-to-face basis with patients in a supportive/helping role in accordance with goals and objectives of therapeutic program. Assists in the planning and carrying out of rehabilitative treatment programs for assigned patients.
− Confers with members of the treatment or therapy team as needed to determine the course of action in patient care and treatment; conducts and supervises patient activities (individual or group) in assigned areas.
− Observes and records a patient's response to therapy, alters approach or activities when necessary to reach treatment goals and individual need. 
Prepares materials and equipment for assigned/designated treatment plan activities.
− Other duties as assigned as related to the position

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge:
− Fundamentals of rehabilitation, therapeutic treatment and application, of mental health principles and techniques involved in treatment.
− Therapeutic practices and techniques of group and individual activities used in therapy.
− Modification techniques to adapt to individual situations.
− Established JCAHO individual assessment standards.
− Purchasing of materials for programs & organization of materials for the cafe/gift shop/rehab program.
− Performance Management (PM), and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and Lean methodologies.

Skill:
− Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships, i.e., patients, co-workers, and patient's families, etc.
− Interpreting therapeutic activities and in analyzing situations accurately and initiating effective action/measures.

Ability:
− Motivate patients as deemed appropriate by Individual Treatment Plans.
− Maintain sensitivity, objectivity, and flexibility under pressure associated with mentally/emotionally ill patients.
− Communicate verbally and in writing.
− Interpret therapeutic activities to patients and appropriate others.
− Supervise patient workers to maximize their performance in vocational related activities.

Selective Preference(s):

The ideal candidate will have:
− Three years experience in a healthcare field preferred. Preference given to candidates with a COTA/L certification or candidates with previous experience in a mental health setting.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

− Must be able to obtain and maintain CPR and NVCI certification.
− May be required to take van training & maintain van safety card,

- A State Hospital employee must be able to obtain a valid Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card pursuant to A.R.S. § 41-1758.07.

Driving is required for State Business.
- Employees who drive on state business require possession of and the ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any driver training (See Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.11).
