Job Summary:

IMPORTANT DEADLINES:

  • Written Exam to be taken online between: Monday, October 21, 2024 - Tuesday, November 5, 2024.           
  • Oral Board start date: Monday, December 16, 2024.

  • Email Approved Voluntary Demotion Memo: Friday, Dec 20, 2024.
    • Note: Voluntary demotion applicants must have an approved voluntary demotion memo on file with CPR to be considered for a job offer.
  • Email copies of physical fitness certificate and/or transcripts (see section 3): Friday, Dec 20, 2024.

SECTION 1: SPECIAL SELECTION FACTOR(S)-THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED -

  • 18 moths of experience as a Correctional Officer II with the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, & Reentry or 12 months of experience as a Correctional Officer II with the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation & Reentry and 6 months of experience as a Correctional/Detention Officer with another agency.
  • A letter of recommendation from the unit Deputy Warden is required by the close of the announcement. Any candidate who does not provide an approved, signed letter of recommendation will not proceed in the testing process (form located on the CPR intranet).

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • PERFORMANCE EVALUATION – Must receive a rating of meets expectations or better.
  • SUSPENSION – Ineligible to apply for one year from the date of suspension.
  • VOLUNTARY DEMOTIONS – Employees accepting a voluntary demotion shall be required to remain in the classification/position requested for a period of at least two years before being considered for appointment to any other position. Voluntary demotion applicants must have an approved voluntary demotion memo on file with CPR to be considered for a job offer. No job offers will be made without an approved voluntary demotion.
  • DEMOTIONS (DISCIPLINARY) – Any employee who has been demoted one level shall be ineligible to apply for a promotional opportunity for two years from the date of the demotion. If demoted more than one level, the employee shall be ineligible to apply for a promotional opportunity for three years from the date of the demotion. A demotion received after the promotional process has started and prior to the promotion shall result in the permanent removal from that CPR. Once removed from a CPR for a demotion, the applicant shall not be eligible to compete for a Correctional Officer Series position until two or three years, depending on the number of levels demoted, after the date of the demotion. The first day served of the demotion shall be considered the effective date of the demotion.

SECTION 2: EVALUATION AND TESTING PROCESS -

Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of training and experience. Study references/resources are posted on the ADC Internet and Intranet websites. All relevant information is subject to verification. Please note the following: 

  • Each promotion or different position with the same employer must be listed separately on the resume and must include adequate work history identifying experience, duties, qualifications, selective requirements, and/or preferences must be reflected on the resume in order to receive applicable credit.
  • Applicants who meet the KSAs and selective preferences will be invited to the next step of the process. Applicants who achieve or exceed a passing score on the oral board interview will have their names placed on the Central Promotional Register after other promotional points are included, if any.
  • Rank on the register will be calculated by adding passing scores from the written exam, oral board interview, and other promotional points.
    • NOTE: Notification of eligibility to test will be e-mailed directly.

 

SECTION 3: OTHER PROMOTIONAL POINTS -

  • YEARS OF SERVICE IN QUALIFYING CLASS ABOVE THE 2YR MINIMUM: 1yr=10pts; 2yrs=20pts; 3yrs=30pts. Years of service will be based on clear dates of employment you provided on your resume and/or online application.
  • PASS PHYSICAL FITNESS TEST (VOLUNTARY): Maintain 50%=40pts. You must supply a copy of your voluntary physical fitness certificate.
  • DEGREES: AA=20pts; BA=30pts; MA=40pts. You must supply a copy of your transcript(s) for college degrees.

SECTION 4: REGISTER/JOB OFFERS -

  • The register developed from this recruitment will expire when a new external statewide register is developed. D.O. 504 specifies that a register shall be active for the period of time specified in the announcement or until it no longer satisfies recruitment needs, whichever occurs first. Registers may be extended when necessary.  
  • When job offers are extended, they are made to candidates in rank order and in consideration of the geographic preference.
  • To change geographic preference, please submit a revised form through your Personnel Liaison.
  • A candidate who declines any two promotional/job offers in the location(s) for which they have indicated their geographical preference(s), shall be placed at the end of the register.
  • If a candidate declines a third promotional/job offer their name will be permanently removed from the register.  
  • Employees who are offered a position and have been out of security positions for more than two years will be required to attend COTA training.

NOTE: If you are currently working outside of the correctional series you will have to undergo the correctional officer hire procedures. The procedures may include medical/physical, psychological evaluation, updated background investigation, and the completion of the Correctional Officer Training Academy.   

SECTION 5: EDUCATIONAL STIPEND -

Positions in this classification are eligible for an educational stipend: Associate’s Degree 2.5%; Bachelor's Degree: 5%; Master's Degree or above: 7.5%. If you have completed one of these degrees, submit the Education Supplement-Security form Education Supplement and documentation of your degree as noted on the form with your application. If eligible and appointed, the stipend amount will be effective on the date of your appointment. Education requests submitted after the date of appointment are effective at the beginning of the pay period they are received in personnel. This stipend is subject to available funding and may be canceled at any time.

Job Duties:

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Under the direct supervision of the Correctional Sergeant, the Correctional Corporal monitors inmates/offenders, maintains control and enforces the rules of a correctional facility. The Correctional Corporal will perform a full range of duties as a Lead for lower level correctional staff by assisting the Correctional Sergeant in assigning / reassigning staff during a designated shift; train, evaluate and assess staff attendance. Review misconduct reports submitted by lower level personnel for completeness and accuracy before submitting to the Sergeant. Assist in supervising the work of Correctional Officer II staff in the safe custody, discipline and welfare of inmates on an assigned shift. Keep accurate head count of inmates in assigned security post. Ensure security staff maintain the prescribed security, custody and control of inmate populations; inspect living / work areas to ensure proper security, sanitation and safety for staff and inmates; inspect vehicles and other equipment used by staff to maintain safety, accountability and compliance; as required; prepares / completes reports related to incidents or inappropriate activities; ensures compliance with statutory laws and agency policies and procedures; writes and reviews incident / significant incident reports and use of force reports; initiates administrative and inmate misconduct investigations and recommend / initiate prescribed actions as outlined per Departmental policies and procedures. Attend required training on or off site as scheduled. Responsible for the safety of all inmates assigned to the area of responsibility; isolates inmates when requests for protection are made, learns of an instance of sexual assault or attempted and / or any other incidents that require separation are made. In addition, this position is required to drive on state business and perform other duties appropriate to the assignment.

WORK CONDITIONS: Shift work; exposure to hazards associated with duties maintaining security, order and discipline of inmates in and outside of an institution.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of: Federal, State and agency laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures and due process governing the security, order and discipline of inmates; principles and practices of supervision, work leadership and training; methods, techniques and practices of maintaining the security, order and discipline of inmates; methods and techniques of self-defense, and use of weapons and related defense/control equipment; vernacular used by inmates; methods, techniques and practices of the paraprofessional counseling for inmates; portable and stationary, two-way radio networks used to communicate inside an institution or with other institutions; methods and techniques of performing administrative work appropriate to the assignment.

Skill in/Ability to: Applying and interpreting Federal, State and agency laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures governing the security, order and discipline of inmates; training staff in the proper methods of security, use of force and paraprofessional counseling; interpreting the vernacular used by inmates; training in the proper use of weapons and related defense and control equipment; basic first aid measures, and use of devices for self-protection from serious health disorders; verbal and written communications as required by the duties and assignments in a correctional setting; interpersonal relationships within a correctional setting; maintaining a calm and even temperament during emergency situations; performing the administrative work activities appropriate to the assignment.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Some positions require a medical/physical evaluation, psychological examination, pre-employment drug screening, and a background investigation prior to appointment. A current Arizona driver's license appropriate to the assignment is required at the time of appointment. As a condition of continued employment, employees in a safety sensitive position may be subject to random drug testing, as required by Department Policy. Selected candidates must successfully complete the seven-week Correctional Officer Training Academy.
