Upon success completion of the internship, if selected for full time employment the pay range will be: $39,165.26 - $49,165.26 

This internship can be up to 6 months, depending on Service Member's availability

Job Summary:

This position is an entry to journey level Airport Firefighter and exists to provide Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) services to the Grand Canyon National Park Airport as required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This position provides first responder and firefighting services on any and all emergencies to outlying areas around and near the airport. Emergency situations include: aircraft accidents/incidents; aircraft passenger medical emergencies; motor vehicle accidents; hazardous material (HAZMAT) incidents/spills; mass casualty incidents; search/rescue/extrication missions; and other related suppression needs. This position also provides assistance in airport operations, airport security, airfield maintenance, snow removal, weed control and wildlife management, and other airport operational duties as assigned.

Job Duties:
  • Airport/airfield maintenance: inspect and repair airfield lighting systems, signage, and directional equipment; weed control, tree removal/trimming and abatement, snow removal operations; fueling agent inspection.

  • ADOT property inspection, clean and maintain fire station building, storage buildings and grounds.

  • Attend training and testing session to obtain and/or maintain required certifications. Training and testing included but are not limited to FAA 139 certification required testing/training, firefighter, EMT and CPR training, CDL training/testing and any training/testing required by ADOT policies/procedures.

  • Vehicle and equipment maintenance/troubleshoot/inspection; conduct daily inspections of all emergency vehicles, equipment, tools, supplies, and personal gear.

  • Provide airport security perimeter checks; check badging, gate access/security; escort personnel; conduct other security duties as required by FAA part 139.

  • Respond to aircraft and medical emergencies, including fire related tasks for structural and land fires, mass casualty incidents, HAZMAT incidents, search/rescue/extrication missions, etc. 100% CALL BACK

  • Other duties as assigned as related to the position.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge Of:

  • Aircraft crash and rescue firefighting techniques and
    equipment.
  • Rescue methods and equipment.
  • Medical emergency techniques.
  • Maintenance procedures for various types of
    rescue/firefighting equipment.
  • Maintenance of airfield equipment, lighting skills.
  • Welding, snow removal operations, and signs.
  • Maintenance of airport facilities, runways and equipment.
  • Airport operations procedures, airport familiarization, airport
    certification manual and emergency plan.
  • ADOT policies and procedures.
  •  Understanding of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Office, and all
    Google related Programs.

Skills In:

  • Aircraft crash and rescue operations, structure fire, forest and
    wild land firefighting techniques and operations.
  • Operating assigned firefighting and airport equipment.
  • Oral and written communications.
  • Teamwork/team building skills.
  • Snow removal operations and painting.

Ability To:

  • Follow instructions in an emergency situation, anticipate
    problems, follow commands, and follow contingency plans in a
    professional manner.
  • Administer emergency medical care, act quickly and calmly in
    emergency situations.
  • Maintain and/or renew all certifications and licenses during
    time of employment.
  • Ability to pass medical/physical examinations.
  • Ability to be On Call with 100% callback when assigned.
Selective Preference(s):

Ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of experience as a professional rescue/structural firefighter.

Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • Valid State Driver's License and retention of said license for the duration of employment.
  • Arizona State Fire Marshal, International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) or DOD Equivalent combined Firefighter I and II Certification obtained within the first 12 months of hire.
  • CDL license (Class B) With tanker endorsement and EMT-B preferred
  • Those hired without Firefighter I/II, CDL (Class B) with Tanker endorsement and EMT-B must obtain one within 12 months of hire.
  • An FAA Part 139 8 hour Live Fire Burn must be acquired within the first 12 months of hire and maintained every 12 consecutive calendar months therein.
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1582: a medical/physical evaluation is required prior to appointment and will continue annually after appointment.
