Job Summary:

Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled and specialized work activities in the operation of a recreational, historic or natural resource park; interprets natural features of the area, or historic objects/artifacts for visitors; and ensures public safety by enforcing Park rules and regulations.

This position will be assigned to the Cave Unit for Kartchner Caverns State Park.
Under the general direction of the Cave Unit Supervisor and Park Manager, the employee will perform a variety of skilled work activities associated with the operation and maintenance of recreation-based or natural resource/historic park.

These responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Work both independently and with others.
• Data collection and reporting with a high degree of accuracy utilizing Excel and/or Google Sheets.
• Ensure that the caverns are ready for tours each morning and clear and secure the caverns each evening.
• Follow all procedures and policies regarding cavern safety and natural resource conservation as set forth by Kartchner Caverns State Park and Arizona State Parks and Trails.
• Completes all training required for this position and any additional duties in a timely manner.
• Provide assistance to other park units as needed.
• Provide scientific data to interpretive rangers when requested.
• Present interpretive programs on a variety of topics (when assigned by supervisor) as well as lead cavern tours for public visitors.
• Respects, advocates and educates the importance of preservation and cultural resources.
-Can spend up to 2 hours or more in the cave collecting data and opening/closing the cave.
-Help with invasive plant removal.
• All other duties as assigned.

This position must be able to work weekends and holidays.

Job Duties:

Duties include:
• Opens and closes the cave.
• Prepare cavern(s) for tours.
• Performs specific daily, weekly, monthly and annual task and procedures that are done to maintain the health of the cave ecosystem and safety standards for the staff and visitors.

Programmatic:
• Hosts visitors; conducts interpretive programs.
• Provides information in response to visitor questions and concerns.

Reporting:
• Records and completes all necessary reports concerning the cave unit as assigned by supervisor.
• Data collection and analysis.

Minor plumbing and electrical work:
• Changing of cave light bulbs, working with park electrician to change rope lights and wire nuts.
• Work on mister system in the cave.

Public & Staff Safety:
• Promote the safety of park visitors and enforces Park rules and protect Park resources.
• Utilizes two-way radio communications system.
• Confers with local officials and law enforcement officers as directed by supervisors
• Completes all necessary reports concerning incidents.

• Other duties as assigned as related to the position.

Selective Preference(s):

Bachelors in Science or Natural Resources and/or at least 3 years experience/employment in science related field work.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Must possess and maintain a current Arizona Driver's license appropriate to assignment.
Obtain CPR/First Aid within 90 days.
