Job Summary:

Employees must currently be a Correctional Sergeant with the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry with a minimum of 12 months experience as a Correctional Sergeant and have worked a minimum of 12 months at the current institution.

Requires possession of and the ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver's license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.).

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION – Must receive a rating of meets expectations or better.
VOLUNTARY DEMOTIONS – Employees accepting a voluntary demotion shall be required to remain in the classification/position requested for a period of at least one year before being considered for appointment to any other position. Voluntary demotion applicants must have an approved voluntary demotion memo on file with Central Promotional Register to be considered for a job offer. No job offers will be made without an approved voluntary demotion. The job offer will be made to the next available candidate.
DEMOTIONS (DISCIPLINARY) – Any employee who has been demoted to one level shall be ineligible to apply for a promotional opportunity for two years from the date of the demotion. If demoted to more than one level, the employee shall be ineligible to apply for a promotional opportunity for three years from the date of the demotion. A demotion received after the promotional process has started and prior to the promotion shall result in the permanent removal from that CPR. Once removed from a CPR for a demotion, the applicant shall not be eligible to compete for a Correctional Officer Series position until two or three years, depending on the number of levels demoted, after the date of the demotion. The first day served of the demotion shall be considered the effective date of the demotion.

Job Duties:

Manages and performs duties within the Arizona Department of Corrections, Central Office Communications Centers (COCC); processes, prioritizes, and analyzes incoming information, determines reporting formats and personnel notifications, prepares and submits appropriate responses. It is a 24/7, 365 days operation tasked with responding to department Significant Incident Reports (SIR), information from law enforcement agencies as well as public inquiries. Uses statewide radio and telephone communications systems; operate and dispatch statewide radio transmissions, verifies and enters information, felony warrants, functions as a first line information manager providing command, control, and communications (C3), support to all levels of the organization as well as outside support agencies, provides after hours support for internal partners, including Community Corrections, Fugitive Services, and Electronic Monitoring Unit, is authorized and expected to make data inputs into such database systems such as ACIS and ACJIS. Supports executive staff during all prison significant incidents, emergency, crisis and contingency operations; providing time sensitive updates, coordination within the agency, and keeping support agencies informed when appropriate.  Monitors, instructs, and directs Home Arrest inmates while keeping Community Corrections Officers informed.  There is minimal inmate contact for these employees assigned to the COCC. Follows established procedures, policies, maintains databases, assists in training new personnel, and other duties appropriate to the assignment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

KNOWLEDGE OF: Security, custody and disciplinary practices and procedures in a correctional institution; Federal, State and agency laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures governing controls of inmates; methods, techniques and practices of paraprofessional counseling and crisis intervention for inmates; principles and practices of supervision and work leadership; The use of self-defense and use of weapons and related defense and control equipment; practices and techniques of observing, detecting and defusing adverse actions by inmate populations.

SKILL IN/ABILITY TO: Applying and interpreting security, custody and discipline measures for an institution; applying methods and techniques of paraprofessional counseling and crisis intervention for inmates and staff; applying methods and techniques of supervising; using and training in self-defense and use of weapons and related defense/control equipment; observing, detecting and defusing adverse actions by inmates; basic first aid measures, and use of devices for self and staff protection from serious health disorders; verbal and written communications as required by the duties and assignments in a correctional setting; interpersonal relationships within a correctional setting; maintaining a calm and even temperament during emergency situations.

THIS PROMOTIONAL REGISTER MAY BE USED TO DEVELOP FUTURE HIRING LISTS FOR SIMILAR POSITIONS IN THE SAME GEOGRAPHICAL AREA FOR UP TO SIX MONTHS.

D.O. 504 specifies that a Promotional Register shall be active for the period of time specified in the announcement or until it no longer satisfies recruitment needs, whichever occurs first. When necessary, Promotional Registers may be extended.

Positions in this classification are eligible for an educational stipend: Associate’s Degree 2.5%; Bachelor's Degree: 5%; Master's Degree or above: 7.5%. If you have completed one of these degrees, submit the Education Supplement-Security form Education Supplement and transcripts of your degree as noted on the form with your application. If eligible and appointed, the stipend amount will be effective the date of your appointment. Education requests submitted after the date of appointment are effective the beginning of the pay period they are received in personnel. This stipend is subject to available funding and may be cancelled at any time.
