AUTOMOTIVE INTERN

This Intern position offers a great opportunity for students to obtain on the job training in light/heavy automotive repair and preventative maintenance and welding techniques.

Part-time – not to exceed 1,500 hours per calendar year

Anticipated hiring rate is $15.00 hourly

Job Summary:

Under the direct guidance of the Shop Supervisor, Lead Technician or other assigned staff, this position will assist in performing specific preventative maintenance functions to include but not limited to, lube/oil changes, inspection repair and replacement of tires and assisting with minor repairs. The position may also assist journeyman Welders in applying appropriate welding techniques to fabricate, up-fit, design, modify, develop and/or repair various equipment when applicable. The position will coordinate with Supervisor, Lead Technician, Welder or other assigned staff on all repairs.

Job Duties:

Assist assigned staff in performing preventative maintenance on all types of light and heavy duty equipment, including lube/oil change, tire repair/mounting, and minor repairs or adjustments. Assist journeyman Welders in applying appropriate welding techniques to fabricate up-fit, design, modify, develop and/or repair various equipment.

Assist assigned staff in performing minor repairs on all types of equipment such as replacing batteries, light bulbs, belts and hoses. Assist skilled mechanics in completing projects.

Assist in the inspection of repair and/or replace all types of tires on light and heavy duty equipment.

Will wear all required Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) while performing assigned duties and follow all applicable Safety and Environmental Protection Policies/ Guidelines.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge in:
* Preventative Maintenance requirements and procedures including lube/oil change, tire mounting/repair.
* Minor automotive and equipment repairs.
* Various types of welding and appropriate applications of each.
* General safety equipment and practices associated with vehicle maintenance and welding.

Skills in:
* Performing general preventative maintenance.
* Making minor repairs/adjustments on vehicles.
* Safely operating equipment and tools.

Ability to:
* Follow oral and written instructions.
* Work well with others.
* Lift up to 50 lbs and push/pull 90 lbs; pass a physical exam.

Selective Preference(s):

Must be an enrolled student in an Automotive/Medium/Heavy Diesel/Welding Technology education program through a high school or vocational school, and must have completed at minimum three (3) months of education in the applicable field.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Employment is contingent upon passing a medical/physical examination.

This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
