Job Summary:

This Traffic Engineering Specialist position is located in the Southeast District within the Southern Region. Possible duty post locations include Safford, AZ and Globe, AZ. This position reports to the Assistant Regional Traffic Engineer. This position performs essential functions within the field of traffic engineering, including signing, striping, signals, lighting, and traffic control plan review, traffic impact study review, work orders, data collection and analysis, and other duties as assigned. This position represents the Regional Traffic Engineer and sometimes the District Engineers while corresponding with internal and external customers, including members of the general public and local government staff. This position is team-oriented and proactive. This position initiates solutions to complex traffic engineering problems and has major responsibilities related to every aspect of traffic engineering, including intersection and roadway safety, maintenance and operations.

This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Job Duties:
  • Review traffic control plans related to encroachment permits.

  • Prepare work orders for signing, striping, signals, lighting, and maintenance crews, and perform related field-reviews.

  • Review traffic impact statements and analyses, and review off-site improvement plans for proposed developments.

  • Review signing, striping, and maintenance of traffic plan sheets for construction projects, and attend project field reviews and partnering/pre-construction meetings.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge in:

-ADOT Traffic Guidelines & Processes.
-Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
-ADOT Temporary Traffic Control Design Guidelines.
-ADOT Signing & Marking Standard Drawings.
-ITE Trip Generation.
-AASHTO Green Book and ADOT Roadway Design Guidelines.
-ADOT Construction Standards.
-ADOT Standard Specifications.
-Arizona Traffic Law (Title 28).

Skill in:

-Computer software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, and Adobe Acrobat.
-Operating traffic counting equipment and radar speed data collection equipment.
-Oral and Written Communication.
-Problem Solving.

Ability in:

-Operate a state vehicle.
-Carry out assignments without direct supervision.
-Teamwork & Collaboration.
-Eagerness & willingness to learn new skills.

Selective Preference(s):

High school diploma or high school diploma equivalent. Background and/or work experience in traffic engineering, traffic control, roadway construction or maintenance, signing and striping, and/or signals and lighting. ATSSA Certification(s).

Pre-Employment Requirements:

This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).

All newly hired State employees are subject to and must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).
